Only ever went to the CPK party once, as it’s not really my thing. But curious if anyone knows why it’s being discontinued.

The CPK event began 30 years ago as an event dedicated to the law school and welcoming newly admitted students at Boyd. I don’t have any official word from the firm, but if I had to guess, after 30 years of hosting what was a generous and widely appreciated celebration—open to law students, lawyers, judges, professors, the broader community—they may have felt it was time to pass the torch. It’s not easy to sustain something of that scale for free, year after year. And with another firm now putting on a very similar “welcome back” event just weeks earlier—now too under the banner of supporting the law school and seemingly with more support from the school—it’s possible CPK felt their efforts were being overshadowed or that the uniqueness of what they’d built was being diluted.

Honestly, I’d be pretty peeved if I’d supported the law school and its students for decades, only to have another firm come along and throw a nearly identical party right before mine, soaking up a lot of the attention and institutional support.

If that’s the case, I can’t say I’d blame them. Thirty years is an incredible run, and their contribution to the community deserves a lot of recognition and gratitude.

I probably went 8-10 times over the years, but not recently. It was always a good time, but I am sure that the expense has become tremendous, and who knows what sort of issues there might be in terms of insurance, permits, etc. I know that things did get a little… overly raucous by the end of the night once or twice in years past.

In the old days we had Mike Hines’ New Admittee party at his ranch plus we looked forward to the annual Bosses’ Night. Both were great, and if you overindulged you asked for a designated driver. After Mike died, the Bar started having the New Admittee party in weird places, including the lawn with the marble tombstones in Howard Hughes Center. Craig Kenny is a gracious host and an immensely generous member of the Bar.

2:54 PM–Mike Hines New Tees party? Wasn’t that Gillock at his ranch that had the party before the bar started sponsoring it–Clark County Bar. When I passed the bar in the early 1990s, the firms and gov’t agencies used to solicit for applicants. Now the market is flooded with attorneys from the law school.

There was no Boyd Law School 30 years ago. It opened in 1998. Craig did these parties as a good faith gesture and community goodwill event. As with all good things, Craig is not as young as he once was.

Searching for recommendations for an employment lawyer regarding a potential claim against a governmental entity. Adam Levine comes to mind. Who else out there is formidable?

Adam is a nice guy but I wouldn’t hire him to do legal work. She gets a bad wrap around here because she was Bar president but I think Paola Armeni is very good at suing the government.

End of an era downtown.

The CPK party is unique. Most law community events are stuffy, pretentious, and boring. The CPK party is a throwback to college fraterity parties, except the drunks and slobs are older and less attractive, and many of them are lawyers, judges and Nevada dignitaries.

CPK lets in anyone who wants to come in, eat, drink, and have a good time. It’s a cultural and socioeconomic melting pot with a live band, free food, free drink, and giveaways. Name something better than that.

The video of the ICE arrest. An SUV coming in hot and armed men coming at you pointing guns. That’s what we’re doing now? Wow.

You mean against a criminal? What do you think is wrong with that? I don’t see it.

This seems like an important place to share this NYT gift article: ‘Bow to the Emperor’: We Asked 50 Legal Experts About the Trump Presidency
Before the election, we surveyed the legal establishment about what a second Trump term could mean for the rule of law. A year later, they’re very, very worried https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/magazine/legal-experts-trump-justice-department.html

BAR EXAM: October issue of Nevada Lawyer dedicated to the new fangled bar exam. There are sample questions in the article on the Foundation Law Exam. I got one or two wrong. Doubt the 100 question curve ball exam will be that hard. What do you think of this new exam? Will it be enough? No essays? Just 100 multiple choice and then Performance Tests. Hardly anyone submitted comments against it when the Nevada Supreme Court had a docket and welcomed comments/input

I have learned my lesson not to try to comment on things they solicit comment for – it just gets you marked as a troublemaker and they do what they want anyway.

9:59 AM-The Nevada Supremes wanted comments. The comments and opposition to mandatory malpractice insurance killed it. There was apparently a spirited debate about the future of the bar exam. Several Justices confirmed it. That being said there were comments mostly from out of state law professor and folks supporting the bar exam changes. There was very little opposition. There should have been an uproar. There wasn’t.

What are the chances this can be reversed? There will be a delay between the new bar exam and the harms that come from it. Even then, the proponents (overwhelming NOT practitioners) will attribute the harms to something else. Seems dismal from my point of view, but I’d love to be told I’m wrong.

Well the Arizona Supreme Court proposed replacing JDs with a Masters of Law program and an easy bar exam for criminal practitioners to alleviate the shortage of criminal defense attorneys. It just got defeated. They were going to essentially have paralegals represent criminal defendants. Opposition from the bar stopped it. Nevada’s new bar exam is unique but will it be enough. At least no reciprocity as I know it.

You are right. It’s a race to the bottom because it is unfair to rigorously test some people.
