The Honorable Judge ______, Ret.

  • Law

Now that we’ve talked about who you think are the top Clark County judges, let’s discuss which of those are retiring or will definitely not be trying to stick around in the next election. (FYI, all of the terms of the current crop of Eighth Judicial District Judges expire in 2014.) To start things off, we’ll throw out something we heard recently in the elevator at the RJC:  Judge Bixler will probably not be looking to be retained next year. There are probably a few others as well, but who exactly may depend on where they are in terms of being able to retire on the County’s dime.

Who have you heard is going to be adding the Ret. after their name? Who should retire? What factors should they consider? Should there be an age limit or term limits for judges? (Feel free to discuss federal judges as well–we hear Judge Riegle is stepping down as soon as they have someone to fill her spot.)

One would think Miley would have stepped down after her disorderly behavior at the soccer field and embarassing family escapades. No such luck. She has no shame at all. She'll run again. Ditto Vega.

Lets presume the Class of 2010 just got in and is not going anywhere any time soon.

Vega will not run again (see her deal with the Commission)

Bixler will have vested in the State Pension and will not run again. Judge Smith I believe was of the same class and hear has the same motives.

I hear Judge Cory is ready to retire but having watched him lately he seems to have gotten a little zip back in his step.

Judge Earl probably needs to retire. Whatever the varied opinions are on him as a jurist, at a certain point you have to let your health dictate whether you can and should continue performing.

Judge Riegle's day has likewise come and go.

No question about Bixler. he takes every opportunity to tell those setting trials next year "I won't be here for that!"

The rumors are: Silver to go to Supreme. Stepping down: Earl, Bixler, Cory, Vega, Smith.

The bigger question is who are the front runners: Davidson, Rasmussen, Bateman, Chelini, are all rumored to run again.

Abbi Silver to the Supreme Court? NFW. I mean the blind ambition which took her Muni to Justice to District in succeeding cycles was one thing, but the NSC? Whose seat?

Nothing wrong with some blind ambition. Particularly since it seems to be working.
