I’m grateful to for a break. I’ve worked nonstop the past two years. Taken exactly one half day of PTO in two years, worked most holidays. After today, I’m off till Monday.

Probably a good thing. I’m starting to really hate my boss, colleges, and the staff even. Every little thing they do annoys me.

Why? How is it a benefit to anybody for you to take one half day of PTO in two years?

I hope you’re making retire very early money.

And enjoy your vacation! Hopefully it’s contagious.

OK, it may be worth it if you’re making $1m+ a year so you can retire ASAP. If not, evaluate whether you’re a sucker who’s being milked for every last hour/dollar.

Even if you’re crushing it, there’s no way you can’t take 2-3 days every month and get the same results.

And, for what it’s worth, I like my job. I like doing it a lot. I don’t care to retire in my 40s at all. I’m still going to enjoy my life and take vacation.

Sorry you are going through this 9:29. However I anecdotally have a different response than those below. I was you. I resented by boss, colleagues and clients. Thought how could they do this to me. Except they didn’t. This was purely self-imposed. I thought that I had to work that hard (even though my boss did not). I thought that my clients were making it so I could never take a break (they had no idea that this was the case because they did not have the macro view of what I was doing for every other client). They were not doing this to me. I was doing this to me.

Does anyone know how to get a copy of the latest Sandy Van complaint filed by Bar Counsel. It was mentioned in previous posts. Please advise and post a link. Does anyone know what the controversy is about with Sandy Van and other personal injury firms?

Out of curiosity, I ran the briefing, ABA Standards, NRPC and some random disciplinary decisions through ChatGPT. I told ChatGPT it was a Nevada Supreme Court Justice and that it had to draft a decision. Here’s the conclusion of the A.I. opinion:

Sanction Determination
The primary purpose of attorney discipline is protective, not punitive. As the ABA Standards note, sanctions should “protect the public and the administration of justice from lawyers who have not discharged, will not discharge, or are unlikely to properly discharge their professional duties” (ABA Standard 1.1). Considering the nature of the misconduct, Van’s mental state, and the harm caused, a stayed suspension with conditions is appropriate.

Suspension with Conditions:

Length: Stayed suspension of two years, contingent on a one-year probationary period.
Conditions During Probation:
Ethics Education: Completion of a State Bar-approved ethics course, with a focus on professional independence and practice management.
Practice Audits: Quarterly audits of her practice by a third-party monitor approved by the Nevada State Bar to ensure compliance with ethical standards.
Mentorship: Participation in a mentorship program with an experienced Nevada attorney approved by the State Bar.
Public Reprimand: A public reprimand will be issued, highlighting the importance of professional independence and serving as a deterrent to similar conduct.
Costs: Van shall bear the costs of the disciplinary proceedings pursuant to SCR 120.

I haven’t worked myself nearly as hard as 9:29, but it’s crazy that as I’ve accumulated some wealth, I’ve realized that I’ve been working too hard to spend it. I don’t even know what to do with it. Guess it comes with growing up lower middle class and not having a bunch of rich friends who are off to Bandon or Jackson Hole every month.

Wealth is relative. I though I was doing ok with about 2M net worth incl my house then I watched a friend play in Bobby’s Room at Bellagio. People throwing in $200k on a flush draw. I still wonder how much money one has to have to bet $200 the next card is a club.

Here’s a (purely) hypothetical:
1. appointed counsel engages in a sexual relationship with client, evidence establishes this conclusively.
2. client gets a TPO against appointed counsel for harassment and potentially revenge porn statute violations
3. client calls cops.

You’re bar counsel. What do you do?

Need additional facts: Is Appointed Counsel a solo or member of a big firm? All seriousness or lack thereof aside, check out IN THE MATTER OF DISCIPLINE OF DAVID L. GOLDFARB, BAR NO. 10356. 2024 Nev. Unpub. LEXIS 847

A $150 Uber ride is much, much, much cheaper than a $10k DUI defense, driver’s license defense proceeding, towing, vehicle replacement, loss of use, depreciation, and time spent in depositions because the family of the person you injured or killed is suing you.

GO THE CHEAP ROUTE SO YOU CAN DRINK FROM THE TOP SHELF.

If only DUI was a rational decision this would make sense. There’s something going on that reason doesn’t explain and punishment doesn’t fix.

Resigned this week from the State Bar of Nevada. No discipline, no investigation, simply no longer wanted to be associated with the SBN. Leaving Las Vegas after four years here and moving to another state to continue my career. Cannot describe how liberated I feel.

DUIs will never stop. Everyone knows it’s dangerous and stupid but do it anyway. Punishments get harsher every year, but punishment does nothing. We need to stop serving alcohol anywhere you can only get by driving.

Love your sentiment. It’s not logical, “to stop serving alcohol anywhere you can only get by driving.” I understand that I cannot force people to not drink and drive. I will commit here and now to not drink and drive this holiday season. That is the best that I can do for the community.

The DUIs will never stop because of the lax penalties codified in Nevada law as well as the coop that occurs everyday in the Courts. This is after all a party town.

Let’s hear it for the firms that “laid off” employees just before the holidays, because the could “no longer afford” them. You want names?

Sure I want names and then I want details on the productivity of the people laid off. Because this notion that people are exempt and get to stop working because its after November 15th is a wives’ tale.

@10:01 bruh. The more probable scenario is the firm laid them off to avoid paying holiday bonuses and will just hire new minions in the new year.

Your comment is bothersome on so many levels. No one stops working after Nov 15th. Yes things slow down, but people go on vacation and family is in town. The court staff is also on vacation and have family in town. The court is also closed additional days. So yes, things slow down. A firm that waits until the holiday season to lay off staff is a shitty place to work, hands down. If someone works at a firm for more than a year, everyone knows if they’re lazy or not. You do not have to wait until the holidays to lay them off. If you do, you should get beat with a rubber hose. If productivity is bad, you counsel your staff immediately and if it does not improve, you fire them. Hire slow, fire quick. Don’t fire people during the holidays.

If you’re such a badass grinder and you’re gonna fire staff during the holidays, just remember what that does to the rest of your staff and your firm culture in general. You’ll have no loyalty and they’ll all hate you, no matter what they say to your face.

If you think the staff that is working hard (and has been complaining about those abusing the system) is adversely affected by letting dead weight go, you are not talking closely enough with your staff. There is never a bad season to get rid of non-productive workers and replace them with productive workers.

Ok bruh. I’m sure when you die your former staff is going to sit around and talk about how thankful they were that one time in 2024 how you fired that lazy paralegal a week before Xmas. Way to miss the forest for the trees.

You are missing the point. There is nothing special about the period 11/15-12/31 that makes firms immune from adding staff or subtracting staff. This notion of a firm rendering employees immune during the holiday season is folly. You are right in this regard: if a firm is firing fully competent and hard-working staff at any time of the year to save on Christmas bonuses, that would be idiotic and our firm would welcome those strong workers no matter what time of year they were laid off.

And you are missing the point. It is true that there is nothing that makes a firm immune from firing someone during the holidays. This conversation is not about adding staff so just stop with that. This conversation is about firing staff during holidays. You keep commenting like you’re some kind of gunner with motivational quotes all over your bedroom saying stupid shit like rise and grind.

Holidays are an annual event and culturally they are tied to spending time with family and friends, it’s the season of giving, blah blah. Whatever your traditions are. Firing someone this time of year will be an eternal reminder that you’re an asshole. Every single year that person and your staff will remember that you fired someone at Christmas. Justify it all you want, but that’s the truth and that is what you’ll be remembered for. Just because you can do something does not mean you should.
