Spring Weekends

  • Law
We’re headed out for the weekend, but thought we’d put up a post for those of you stuck in the office today. Try and get out and enjoy the nice weather if you can. If any of you are struggling, please don’t lose hope. There are people out there willing to help and things can get better.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:  1-800-273-8255
Confidential help from a fellow lawyer is a phone call away
Toll Free: 866-828-0022
If you, or any lawyer in Nevada, are in need of confidential assistance with an alcohol, drug, depression, stress or gambling problem, help is readily available through the LCL Hotline. When calling, leave your first name and telephone number. A fellow lawyer, who has also had problems, will call you back. You’ll be listened to with an understanding heart rather than scorn, judgment and condemnation. You can talk frankly. The person returning your call is solving problems just like yours, and is living happily and usefully doing so.

Good reminder. Thanks! Have a beautiful weekend, all. And remember, just for today, let's all be a little kinder than is necessary.

Recently learned of, and met, happy lawyers. They don't live or work in Las Vegas but in faraway lands where civility is alive and well and the judiciary enforces the rules. Sigh.

Stop it! What next, Supreme Courts in these faraway lands actually process appeals and issue clear precedent for all? Nonsense.

More importantly, they may be licensed as attorneys, but don't actually practice law or represent clients…

Am I the only one who finds it odd that the list of attorneys suspended for failing to provide proof of CLE credits includes only attorneys with last names beginning L-Z, and no attorneys with last names beginning A-K?

@10:51 – the A-K names are a few pages down. Someone screwed up the formatting. Plenty of A names suspended.

David Mann – the guy that got ripped on within the past few weeks here, is on the list. Preston Rezaee of Vegas Legal Magazine fame is on the list. I also see some attorneys that have a lot of outstanding litigation matters on the list.

Ryan Mendenhall on the list after a disciplinary complaint filed against him and he abandoned his practice and all of his clients. Hard to find a bigger hot mess I have encountered in the practice.

Ryan has been suspended for two years from the NV Bar. Should be in prison after taking $25K from his clients and hitting the road.

Ryan was and is a hot mess that has no business practicing law. We got a call from an attorney with whom he was sharing office space trying to help clients that Ryan abandoned. Seriously, Ryan up and left town with peoples' monies that he never served. And he got a 2 year suspension. I don't care about his child support; there are remedies in the Family Court for that. His dereliction as an attorney is abominable. And lets be honest: he was TRULY bad at his job. How Morris Polich & Purdy ever hired him (other than his family connections) is shocking.

Ryan is back in Las Vegas now after his client sponsored love fest to Portland. His suspension states he will have to make restitution to those clients and get current on child support. Together total over $50K. He'll never practice again unless his Dad the doctor bails him out; again.

Someone posted something yesterday about former judges Jackie Glass and Jeff Sobel. Someone else responded that 90% of attorneys reading the blog would not know who Jackie Glass was, let alone Sobel. Is that true, or is it exaggerated? Is the Bar now so youth oriented that they would not remember judges from a decade or so ago, or is it only that those who read these blogs are the younger attorneys?

Practicing 8 years, been in Las Vegas for 11 years. I've heard of Judge Glass (O.J trial and then television, so I knew she was a judge). I also don't know Judge Sobel (but I do remember reading something about him and a bathrobe in an article about disciplining Judge Steve Jones).

Las Vegas native, so I've been around a lot longer than I've been practicing. Remember Glass. Vaguely remember Sobel. Drove past a "Stew Bell for Dept. 7" sign earlier today (off Lone Mountain & Simmons), which made me very confused as I remember him as well.

I hope a DA gets appointed, or at least somebody with a modicum of criminal experience considering the calendars in both departments, BUT if there is only one DA that gets appointed, it better be Ms. Jones and not Mr. Rahman. She is infinitely more qualified. And don't hate on Bailus, he's bringing back the 80's Vegas pompadour.

Ask any Judge. Civil is far harder to pick up than criminal for a judge. Raman and Jones are both out of their league in this panel but it was nice that they were included to make it look more diverse. Coffing for 10. They should leave 18 vacant and let Sally sit there until they do another round of applications and get someone competent to apply.

You are retarded. Barker – excellent at civil, criminal background. Herndon – excellent at civil, criminal background. S. Johnson – Civil background, fucking terrible criminal judge. That's just three off the top of my head. The funny thing about you civil folks is you love to think criminal is for morons, I did plaintiff's side securities litigation prior to going into crim. and I made a lot of money doing it but I hated my life. You guys aren't smarter, it's harder to get a DA's job than it is to work at BigLaw, you're just arrogant dicks.

Having done both civil and criminal, no question, civil is much tougher. We have lots of good civil attorneys become good criminal judges, however, i dont know one example of the converse.

Barker, Adair, Wall. There's three. I've done both, I don't see one as more complex. But one of my favorite things to do is sit in the elevators in the RJC and listen to civil attorneys who just lost a motion bitch about how the judge got the law wrong. Nobody is smarter and more up to date on the law than a civil attorney who just lost a motion hearing.
