Very interesting post at 4:08 about attorney Pete Flangas who recently passed at 96.

I, for one, find it pointless at this juncture to debate the various merits of his performance and career as an attorney. And this is rendered even more the case as only true old-timers would remember him in his prime. For the overwhelming majority of those who remember him, they would only remember his waning years of practice when he was in his upper 70's and his 80's.

And I don't think an attorney's career should be judged by their performance once they are in their 80's, if that is all that would be remembered by most of the current practitioners who actually remember him.

Let's just say he led a very colorful life. Nothing boring about that guy.
He will be missed. His son, attorney Leo Flangas, is a real cool guy and a class act. I feel so badly for his loss. No matter how old your parent is when they pass, it still hurts a lot. It does not help much when someone says "well at least they lived a long life."

That all said, one must try to be grateful, once they get past their grief, that their parent lived so long. My mom died very young and it left quite a hole. Still feel lonely at her birthday and Mother's Day each year.

Now that I've cheered everyone up…

10:05–yeah, you must be the life of the party.

But I do agree with what your saying. I just wish you hadn't reminded those of us who lost parents.

10:07, if 10:05 hadn't reminded you, you still would have thought of your deceased parent at some time during the day. I think I can speak for those of us who have lost parents, or, heaven forbid, even siblings. You think of them at some point everyday. For me, it is seldom a depressing moment. It is usually something that puts a smile on my face.

I lost my only sibling (younger brother) 34 years ago. I still get angry, mad and depressed 90% of the time I think about his him/death. My eyes are welling as I type this post. So much lost. Life was never the same.

US District Court Clerk's office in Nevada is a joke. They are issuing filing fees on appeals with no jurisdiction. Wake me, please, when someone has a clue.

I'll up the ante and up the stakes on you – the federal bankruptcy court clerk's office is even worse. Lazy as well, with their "9-12, 1-4" hours M-F. They are not accountable to anyone, not even Judges, with their bullshit filings in various bankruptcy cases.

They don't hesitate to file a document in a bankruptcy case saying that one of your documents is improper or you are using an outdated form, yet they provide no context or clarification beyond a simple statement such as that. When you call and ask them for context or clarification, they are frequently evasive and act like you are asking them a legal question, and I've even got the "we can't give legal advice" bullshit response that every clerk/court/public official gives when they are too mentally lazy to do their ADMINISTRATIVE job. The few times it's gotten that far and I get that response (over many years), I've persisted and eventually got them to explain what they perceived as incorrect so I can correct it.

And one time several years ago when the Chapter 13 trustee (can't remember which one) had a brief 1-2 hour seminar that discussed how loan mods through the bankruptcy court work work/function (the loan modification program through bankruptcy court was new at the time), someone from the clerk's office showed up. Can't remember specifically what was said or what the argument was, but some attorney complained about some procedure/concern that the clerk's office was doing that was either improper, hassling, or whatnot, and the clerk's office rep became fairly offended and the whole side issue became kind of a pissing match for a few minutes until the attorney just gave up – the clerk's office rep was just that much of an ass.

I like this discussion that began with Pete Flangas because I can see the respect for our aging class. I'm in my 40's and have lost all my grandparents and one parent and the pain is exceptional and I always in disbelief at how this country (the USA) fails to hold up our elderly population as the national treasures they are. I wish I had more time with my grandparents. So much to learn, to know and to love. I have so many regrets that I didn't get a lot of their stories down on paper. I wish the US treated our elderly in the same esteem as other cultures – like Asian cultures.

"What other firm could handle [such a frivolous, publicity-seeking] case?" Surely, no one in Nevada. We would have to go out of state.

10:44, 11;21, 11:43,11;55–Let's stop obsessing over, and condemning, everything he does.

I'm not defending him I'm just saying it does not become any of you to appear envious, gossipy and bitter.

That said, I do recognize that sharing local legal community gossip and news is a main focus of the blog. But still…

1:08–saying a lawsuit is frivolous is not gossipy per se, but in the context it was used, which was to reflexively condemn the favorite whipping boy on the bog, is what makes it gossipy.

And, as 1:32 points out, he is in fact the favorite whipping boy of those who are envious and who enjoy very little success in their careers, and rather than focusing or obsessing over him they should concentrate on being the best lawyers they can be.

BTW, whatever you think of Eglet, he was not some home-grown boy who had a well-connected prominent local dad or anything like that. He came here from a Cal. law school, secured a job with Beckley Singleton, and apparently did not really know too many people in town at that time–which is how a lot of us started our Nevada legal careers(moving here and accepting a job but without yet really knowing too many and not yet having formed any influential connections.)

Point being, those who constantly take pot shots at him originally had the same opportunities, as well as the same limitations, that he did when he started out. And some of these critics are still young enough that they still do have every chance to bust their butt and be an excellent attorney.

So my advice: grow up and take accountability. People who constantly condemn highly successful attorneys on this blog make it clear that such critics are unsuccessful attorneys with almost zero name-recognition, and no meaningful reputation, in the legal community.

How do I know this? Because successful professionals don't waste time or energy being envious of the success of others. They simply don't care.

2:09. Actually, I view it differently as to which one you are complaining about.

Complaining about the court is fair game and I often do so myself. I view it more as complaining about an institution or agency(even though I recognize such institution is composed of individuals).

But relentlessly attacking the same highly successful lawyer, and seeming to be programed to condemn literally everything he does, and a complete inability to concede anything or to give any credit for anything at anytime, does seem quite envious.

Whether it's gossipy or not, I don't know. And I don't agree with the posts that imply that you should refrain from posting that negative material. If you want to post, that should be fine with everyone. Varying viewpoints should be welcomed, and in fact encouraged.

But when you persist in posting such material it does suggest the poster might be a very envious attorney who has not been very successful and bitterly resents the success of others.

1:55–as 2:01 points out Eglet did actually grow up here before he left for law school and then returned to the state.

But you may well be right that he was not some juiced in young attorney with a lot of connections to start with, and that he instead had to work really hard, and really smart, and take many intelligent calculated risks which require real courage.

I am torn on whether this age should be called the Carny Age, the Crazy Age, or the Age of Hysteria. I like all three and there are probably others that work, but the last one really gets to the heart of the matter. America is like an aging woman, suddenly realizing that her biological clock is running out of ticks. All of that phony confidence she learned from modern feminism is quickly turning into anger and bitterness. Much of the lunacy is driven by early and middle middle-aged women.

Time after time, what has been termed cancel culture, turns out to be projectile hysteria by early middle aged women. The Huffington Post is nothing but a coven of homely women in terror over hitting the wall. It is why they foment so much of the doxing and cancel culture nonsense. Popular culture is one long night of premium ice cream, Lifetime channel marathons and late night texting. Our women have gone insane and taken the rest of the country with them.

Does anyone know what became of the reciprocity survey that the State Bar sent around a while back? I would love to know if there was a majority of votes one way or the other and what, if anything, will be done about the results if they were in favor of reciprocity.

If I remember correctly, there was not a majority in favor or not in favor. Many of the responses indicated they would want to know more about what the potential reciprocity program would look like before they could decide in favor or against.

If an appeals court needs 127 pages to explain its reasoning, then the decision is suspect as trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

This is how Robert Eglet describes himself on his website. He is a home grown boy: "A resident of Nevada since childhood, Robert graduated from Western High School in Las Vegas. Thereafter, Robert earned a degree in economics, with honors, from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Robert went on to receive his Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where he graduated in the top 10% of his class."

So 6th circuit says the administrative state cannot legislate when it comes to guns, but 9th circuit says any right to self defense evaporates once you exit your home? Looney tunes.
