Welcome to the new and improved blog! As you can see there are a few changes and likely a few more to come. We will be trying out a few things and, as always, welcome your feedback and suggestions. Also, feel free to start using the new domain name lawblog.law–it’s a lot easier to type. And now back to the news:

The blog’s migration over to WordPress looks great
Heyyyy! Our first Member comment! Congratulations, welcome aboard, and thanks for the kind words!
No one wants to say “First”
No but I’d like to bid you a happy double kickstands to your face!
Dear Mr. Dawg, First, congratulations on the new blog, it looks great. Second, I have read that WordPress sites can track IPs, etc. What kind of protections for anonymity, if any, do we have here? Thanks for you time and I love your Blog!
Thanks for reading, and thanks for your comments/questions. This will be a lengthy answer, because you have raised some good points and asked some good, but complicated question(s).
I’m certainly not the most tech savvy person around, but here’s what I can tell you about the internet and anonymity, as far as I understand those things (which again, is not far at all). Virtually every move everyone takes on the internet is automatically tracked by a host of parties, i.e. the websites you search/visit, your own internet service provider/cell service, and a bunch of other potential parties in between. In other words, without a VPN, you never really have much anonymity on the internet, and even with a VPN, you might have more anonymity, but I still don’t believe its 100%.
With this new WordPress website, as compared to the blogger platform, we as the blog administrators do have access to more information regarding where the traffic and comments on our website come from, but unless someone specifically identifies themselves to us, we do not know the exact location or identity of who is visiting or commenting.
That being said, I think it is important to note that I do believe someone with a subpoena could get the information necessary to figure out exactly who commented what, should someone decide to proceed down that path. I believe they could do this with a subpoena directed to a bunch of different parties. But that was always the case, whether through the old blogger platform or this platform.
The bottom line is that we have never, not even once over the past 12 years, despite many requests/demands and even lawsuits, voluntarily given up any information about our blog and/or its administrators/viewers/commentors, and we are not about to start doing so now.
Although that was, is, and always will be the case, if you plan to post something that could get you or us sued, please don’t do it. Alternatively, if you are concerned about your anonymity, please continue to take all the precautions you can to maintain that, as we all should.
Hope that addresses your comments/answers your questions.
*Edit – To date, we have never voluntarily OR involuntarily given up any information, and we have every intention of keeping it that way.
In other words, we are as anonymous on this blog as we are on every other blog and website on the www, including FB, Instagram, Reddit, X, etc. Got it.
Wow – thank you for such a thoughtful and complete answer. I can’t wait for the future of the blog!
Cheers, and thanks again for the support and for the comments/questions.
How to remain relatively anonymous on the web:
Use an encrypted messaging app. Instead of sending a text message to a friend on your Android, use an encrypted messaging app like Signal. With Signal, all communications have end-to-end encryption on its open-source protocol. The company can’t see your messages or calls, and there are no ads or trackers.
Use an encrypted browser. Google is notorious for its ample data collection. Instead of using Chrome or another browser from a large tech company, use Tor, a secure browser that encrypts your IP address and web activity three times. However, Tor doesn’t encrypt any other web apps you use, which is why you need a VPN as well. What is a VPN, you ask?
Use a VPN. “VPN” stands for “virtual private network,” and, unlike Tor, VPNs encrypt all web traffic from browsers and other web apps. Aside from hiding your IP address, VPNs hide your browsing history and your Youtube history so your internet service provider (ISP) can’t see any of your online activity. The best part? You can set up a VPN in only a few minutes; check out our VPN how to pages for more information.
Use secure email services. Since we’re so deeply entrenched in the Google ecosystem, we use Gmail as our personal email provider. While we love its ease of use, we don’t love that Google keeps all of our private emails on its servers. However, there are secure options like ProtonMail, the same company that brought us ProtonVPN. ProtonMail is based in Switzerland, a nonmember of the surveillance alliance Five Eyes, so the company can’t be forced to give the government customer data. Rather, all email has end-to-end encryption with open source code, and the service is free for Android, iOS, and web users.

That is a lot of work to keep people from knowing you still play Farmville every day.

Any predictions on settlement with Wynn/MGM? I have no special insight or knowledge, but you have to think there will be no strike. Both sides have a strong incentive to get this done before Friday, and definitely before the F1 race. As much as I would have loved to have seen the strike ruin F1 weekend, I’m happy for the union members.
They are dominoes and all will be resolved without a strike.
Nice new blog!
So nice I felt compelled to create a login. Wunderbar!
Glad to see the upgrade. In the best Las Vegas tradition, every sports book in town is now taking action as to who will be the first on this blog to use Denny Crane as their icon…
Welcome aboard and thanks for the kind words, Slim and Jordan!
Paid off my law school loans. $102,000 in 7 years. Think I may just take the rest of the week off and think about getting a new job an a nicer car.
Don’t buy a car right now. Oof.
Well, don’t FINANCE a car rights now. Cash is king.
Interest rates are pushing down the price. In the last 45 days, dealers have abruptly had a VERY HARD time moving inventory. It’s only going to get worse for them. Even if you wait just another 30 days you’ll be better off. Even if you are going to pay cash, wait. And when you do buy, don’t tell them you’re paying cash until you’ve negotiated a final out-the-door price. They will think you are buying a monthly payment and will assume the interest rate is impeding your buying capacity.
My last two cars I’ve found that this doesn’t work anymore. They get ahead of you by specifying that the out-the-door price only applies if you’re financing. They even specify now that the price is tied to you financing only through their vendor since they get an origination cut for the loan through the dealership’s chosen bank. I even walked on a place that wouldn’t honor the quoted price when I wanted to use my own bank that I pre-qualified for at a lower rate.
Can you take their loan and pay it off right away without a penalty?
You’re an attorney (presumably) – read the terms of financing to see if there is an early payoff penalty. If not, then finance with them in-house, make the first installment payment, then next month pay the loan off or refinance with your own bank.
Hint. Buy from out of state. They are always happy to deal if they know you are coming from elsewhere and they can steal a sale from another jurisdiction. I have had great success in Utah over the years and this last few years, Oregon has been very good to me.
Folks who finance cars at the moment are also the kind of folks who finance a waterbed.
Love the Coach reference! You definitely lettered in shit.
No one cares if you are a cash buyer or not these days because no one carries their own notes anymore. If you pay cash, they get their money today. If you finance, they get their money tomorrow and maybe a kickback. No one cares about cash anymore.
2:24 here again. You are absolutely right. I’d like to go the rest of my life paying no interest other than my mortgage. And I would not mind eventually getting rid of my mortgage,
Law school loans were like a fucking tax on my life. I hated them!!! I made the last payment this morning and feel like a new man.
To those of you still paying: I cannot express how good you’ll feel when you make that last payment. It’s like being 10 years younger. Way better than I felt when I graduated, passed the bar, or got my first job. This is something way different and way better.
Why did you take so much in loans? Scholarship FTW.
OP here. Ignorantly chose the higher ranked school over Boyd with scholarship money. Should have taken the money and attended the third tier school. Going to a first tier school is overrated, especially if you’re going to work in Las Vegas. I should’ve taken Boyd’s money. Live and learn.
As attorneys, we can do more to push back against the ranking nonsense. It really does harm students who are lead to believe it matters. It doesn’t (unless you’re aiming for an elite firm on the coasts). Last week, I had lunch with an undergrad who was deliberating what school to attend. I told him to ignore the rankings and pencil out how much debt he would have at graduation and pick that school. I did not go to UNLV, but I told him to go there if they offered him a full ride.
I’ve talked to three people who were planning on going to law school. I told all three of them to go to a law school in the region where they want to live, and get scholarship money instead of choosing the highest ranked school. All three of them ignored my advice (and to be clear, the highest ranked school wasn’t like Yale where the job opportunities are meaningfully different). Oh well.
The two best pieces of advice that I got in Undergrad were (1) go to the school that will allow you to graduate with the no/least amount of debt and (2) (unless its an Ivy) go to the school that is the closest to where you want to ultimately live and work so that you can build clerkships and professional relationships during law school that will allow you to transition into a job after law school.
Congrats 2:24 on getting rid of your debt and on your plans to celebrate by incurring more debt.
Rest of the week? Tomorrow is Thursday and Friday is a legal holiday. Live a little. Take next week off also.

Really missed an opportunity to snap up loblawblog.law
Also, paging @NewlymintedAttorney!
Page the BK Hottie. Although she is so untouchable she likely wont appear.
If the BK Hottie had embraced her designation and created a username on blogger, I would absolutely be paging her on this new platform as well!
‘sup bro. I’ve been posting anonymoosely until I could figure out a way to register without providing any information connectable to me. Can’t create a new email account anymore, everyone wants TFA with a phone number that’s not connected to anything else.
Just wanted to make sure we didn’t lose you with the switchover. We’ve appreciated your support for all these years.
I should also mention that we truly appreciate all the support we’ve received from almost all of you all these years. ❤️ It’s just a bit easier to recognize those of you who’ve decided to post with a consistent identity/avatar.
Update. I think I found a way.
Use a google voice phone number and an anonymous gmail.
Get a Google number. Mine all go to voice mail. I delete everything about every 6 months.
