just trying out the comment features on this new blog. Do I have to register to post? I’m going to sign my name as Clarence Darrow, but that’s not my real name. This could be fun…
Just found this in the terms of service link at bottom of the page: “You don’t have to use your real name to use LB, but don’t impersonate an individual or an entity in a misleading or deceptive manner.”
Welcome! Thanks for checking it out, and for being patient. We’re still working out the bugs.
You don’t have to use your real name, but you shouldn’t impersonate someone real that might post here, if that makes sense?
🤣🤣
You can still post anonymously.
Bam! And so the new look begins.
Another downgrade masquerading as an upgrade. Does Bill Gate run this blog now?
“Another” downgrade”? What was the first one?
Why exactly is this a “downgrade” from what we had before?
What does Bill Gates have to do with anything?
Do you have any constructive comments, or do you just like to whine about change?
if you think this is bad, just wait!
Of course the thwacked crybabies will try to rain on our parade.
Practice question. VDSMs. Can you just file them or are you supposed to send them to the Department for the blue stamp?
I don’t know what VDSM is?
The only thing that I could find on a websearch was Volvo Driving Soccer Mom.
VDSM is a Voluntary Dismissal
You have to get the court’s signature if you want them to count. I see a lot of VDSMs that get filed and they don’t actually close the case.
I suppose it depends on when the voluntary dismissal comes in the case. NRCP 41(a)(1)(A); Willick v. Eighth Judicial Dist. Ct., 138 Nev., Adv. Op. 19, 506 P.3d 1059 (2022). If the courts are requiring an order for a voluntary dismissal early in the case, before much litigation and before an answer or summary judgment motion, then that’s just stupid and contrary to the rule.
You have to submit to the department first so it can be stamped.
I am the OP and got the answer from the Clerk’s Office (that I believe is wrong but whatever). VDSMs (even if filed the day after the complaint is filed) require the “Blue Stamp” from the Department before they can be filed
This is classically moronic and what we’ve all come to expect from the clerk’s office. There is no reason they can’t administratively file a memo that reports the statistical closure reason. Just clerks insisting on being gatekeepers in a manner that does not comport with the rules.
Exercise and video games work well.
I hate change, but I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with our little blog next.
You and me both.
I think because of the changeover, the blog is confused about the timing/order of the comments/replies. I’m hopeful that everything is fixed by tomorrow. Thanks for your patience, everyone!
It looks awesome now btw, all the functions appear to be working great. Awesome job!
Can you please make the font hideous again? I don’t even know what I’m looking at here.
This is a test
Serious question but what hobbies or activities do people do outside of the law? I've recently hit a period of burnout and it feels like my life is the law all the time. I'm hoping a new hobby or activity will help recharge me.

Sex and drugs and rock and roll

Just to find her…
I joined a local Rotary club (Las Vegas West) and find that making the world a better place while enjoying the company of other good people recharges me nicely.
Which one? There are so many?
Yes, there are many and most are good. You want to find one which meets at a time and place convenient to your schedule. Some meet for breakfast, others for lunch and dinner. There are clubs on the west side, downtown, strip (Lawry’s) and east/Henderson. Next is arranging visits to those clubs. Email me at NewClients@aol.com and I’d be happy to help.
Video games are a good way to turn your brain off work, and can be social if you want them to be. Stamp collecting is meditative. Fishing is a good way for me to go outside without being too bored.
Fishing actually sounds like it would be fun to try. Are there good places in Las Vegas? Do you just go out to Lake Mead?
Video games really help me, when I truly have the time for it. Strategic games like Civilization 6 are really easy to get lost in, and it's a nice stress reliever.
I've also gotten a lot more into hiking around RRC, Lone Mountain, Blue Diamond. It's pretty crazy how different you'll feel after a short 3 mile hike and a beautiful view.
I actually want to try lockpicking as a hobby. There's a really interesting youtube channel by the name of LockPickingLawyer who is an absolute pro at it, and it seems like it might be an extremely helpful skill to have in a pinch.

I do woodworking. It is artistic, challenging, and productive. I can make something simple or complicated. It can be done cheaply or with expensive tools. Learning about woods and forests is fascinating. There is a great store called Woodcraft out on Charleston. Although I've stopped many times to make smaller projects, I've been working on a Colonial Secretary made of maple, walnut, etc. for over 2 years and I just have the drawers left. Have fun!
I am taking up woodworking. Are there any groups or classes in LV?

If you want to giving fishing a try without putting too much into it, I would start with some of the city ponds which are stocked. Like Sunset park for example. Check with the Department of Fish and Game for the stocking schedule and go right after they stock the pond you choose. You will catch a few, it will be fun. I know the serious fisherman would baulk at Sunset pond, but it is a good place to give it a try and see if you like it.
Exercise and being social are part of the remedy for burnout. I found I disliked being around people when I'm burnt out, but it's helpful to use the time around other people to turn-off your probing, lawyerly brain and genuinely connect with people.
Just a heads up: Floyd Lamb is being restocked with rainbow trout in November and December, although the specific days aren't known. Go get your fish on!
I have had an Xbox in my office for 20 years. I play a couple of times a month. Definitely a welcome distraction.
I don't have it figure out yet. But when I've had seasons without burnout these are the things I am doing:
1. Reading/listening to books. Obviously, not law related. Something totally different. This will make you more interesting to socialize with.
2. Exercise. Daily. In McKay Coppins book, Mitt Romney mocks the Senators who walk gingerly on the treadmill in the Senate gym wasting time and accomplishing nothing. Adopt Mitt's rule: 140 bpm for 20 minutes or it doesn't count. Mitt's quite old but in great shape. The results speak for themselves.
3. Socialize. I hate to say this, but this socializing has to be with very few attorneys in the group or better yet, none. When we attorneys get together, there's too much law discussed, too many war stories told.
4. Rest. There is real value in doing nothing. It's ok to take a day and just sit. Meditate. Do nothing. Something about this makes me more productive at work and more importantly, more happy.
Recreational reading got me through law school and decades of practice.
Take up cooking. Us lawyers typically have a horribly sedentary lifestyle. Eating fresh food is a huge help for health and weight control. You can buy cookbooks that are designed with healthy options and shopping lists with pretty easy recipes. America's Test Kitchen has a good one my friend uses a lot. When you get good at cooking, you can invite friends over and socialize…get human interaction in that's not arguing with opposing counsel/a judge.
Mountain biking
Get married and have a kid or two so you wont need hobbies or have any free time haha
Marry a money-grubbing woman who took half the shit the lawyer earned by sitting on her ass and fn the neighbor. Posting for a friend.
Those who have heard me say this before will definately be able to tell who I am. If I could go back in time and not have kids, I 100% would not have kids.
Are you kidding me? You’re not special. I tell everyone I know who is childless DON’T DO IT! Kids are great. Child-rearing, especially in this economy and in every economy henceforth, absolutely sucks. Not to mention you’re bringing them into a world that is hell bent on self destructing, between WW3 and climate disasters.
I think upvoting/downvoting comments is great at a place like Reddit where there’s an overwhelming amount of content. I’m not sure it’s necessary on our little blog. But maybe I’m just worried my comments will be downvoted into oblivion.
Thanks for your input/concerns. We’re still just trying things out here to see how it feels. Some of the stuff we try will work so we’ll keep it, and some of the stuff we try won’t work, so we’ll ditch it. I know its a lot of change all at once, so maybe give it some time to see how you feel once the dust settles a bit.
Naming yourself while remaining anonymous is VERY COOL. 😎
🤣 i thought so too, but i suspect this will be one of the first things to get abused and we’ll have to ditch it. i hope i’m proven wrong!
This is why we cannot have nice things.
