Nevada Business Magazine’s 2013 Legal Elite, a list of the top 3% of Nevada lawyers according to their peers (in other words, a totally legitimate survey), was published today. Congrats to those of you who deserve it.

Full disclosure–I don't know anyone. I am a solo (and I don't really have attorney friends). Which may give away who I am…considering who is on the list. All I can say is that I treat my opposing counsel with the utmost respect, and I am shocked to be on the list. So you never know!

OK I made it all the way through the C's before the laughter could not be contained. Lots of good lawyers in there; lots of not so good lawyers in there.

Dear Nevada BM:

Do you really want to sit there and claim that some of Nevada's Legal Elite have had their licenses for three years or less? Seriously?

Don't laugh, 7:10; lots of potential clients rely on this type of nonsense. Sad, but true.

This guy apparently did not appreciate being left out of the Legal Elite.

The annual disgraceful list. I never want my name on a list with so many nobodies. About 10% of the list is legit.

How embarrassing for a magazine that has executives who don't care about what people say about it.

What's embarrassing is all the attorneys' who don't get what these lists are really about- marketing. At the end of the day, my first priority is to the financial security of my family. Of course this list doesn't really reflect the legal elite. Thanks for pointing out the obvious! Don't feign outrage and get your tit twisted over this. All that matters is that the savvy on this list will leverage it for more business and higher rates. And in a way, that does make them elite. To the legal "elite," I salute you! As a young attorney, I hope to join you shortly!

7:39 pm, you're a douche for calling these people nobodies. I'm friends with few of the very junior attorneys on the list, and none of them asked anyone to vote for them. People voted for them because they're likeable and smart. Are they the top lawyers in town? No. But they have the ability to have a bright future and they're not bitter a-holes.

11:30 am, so you think that people who aren't the top lawyers in town but who are likable belong on a list that represents itself as a top 3% list?

I'm in Best Lawyers (which is the ultimate list) and Super Lawyers (which is likely second to Best Lawyers). There's no bitterness, but being on a real list is what matters.

I received multiple emails from people soliciting me to trade votes with them for this Top 3% list.

I agree with 11:30. I too got plenty of solicitations from attorneys wanting me to vote for them. And I agree that although there are plenty of big names on the list, there are tons of them who I have never heard of.

Out of full disclosure, I did make the list, but I don't think it's anything more than marketing. I don't think it's much to brag about.

11:39 am, this is 11:30. All I'm saying is that you're a douche to call them nobodies. Many people on the list may have solicited votes. The ones I know did not. They're not 3%, but just because the magazine has a shitty methodology that ends up naming them top 3% doesn't make them nobobies and shouldn't cast a negative light on them in any way.

Hey 11:39. There is no real list. Get over your self. I bet you ran for student government in law school too.

Let's vote on the top 3% right now on this blog.

This link says there were 7800ish active Nevada attorneys in 2008, so we'll say 235 are in the top 3%.

I agree with the people above saying that the list is crap. The magazine is otherwise pretty legit, so it is strange that they would do this.

so instead of everyone being negative, why not give suggestions on how to make it legit.

Yes, there's definitely some negativity here. I think the only way they will ever make it legit is to use a legit service instead of having everyone just vote for their friends. Most of the better lawyers likely don't care to be included in a meaningless list and therefore have less reason to waste hours soliciting votes. Hence the non-legit results.

I agree that the list is pretty embarrassing. There are some big names on it, but clearly the list isn't the top 3%.

Fo whatever it's worth, ditto on the comments. Any reason the magazine doesn't use a list like Super Lawyers that actually finds the top 5% using an actual methodology?

I'm not going to take either side, but I do find it funny that people who are on the list seem to think it's a real list.

I think it's a good marketing tool for lawyers because the public doesn't know the difference. However, although I am personally on the list, I wouldn't put it on my bio.
