Finally, there is a lot going on right now in the world. A lot of uncertainty and fear and instability. It’s not really the end of the world. It may feel like that though and that’s okay. It looks like we may go through a little rough patch for a while, but we have done it before and will do it again. We are all in this together. Although we are all dealing with different versions of this problem, we are in it together. Hang in there and remember this will pass. You’ve got this. We’ve got this. If you need to talk to someone reach out–just remember to wash your hands first.
Dana Gentry from Nevada Current started tweeting last night and then repeated the tweet this morning that that Chief Judge Linda Bell has put out an e-mail that LVRJ sent a reporter exposed to COVID-19 into the RJC and that the reporter was in one (unnamed) courtroom. LVRJ put out a story this morning that 5 employees are on self-quarantine. Anyone know which courtroom that it was?
I read somewhere 3A
So what case was the R/J covering in Allf's Courtroom?
Anyone else having trouble being productive with all of the virus announcements coming out? (Might be time to cut back on caffeine).
Read where, 9:22?
It was 3C, two days ago.
I heard 3C as well.
They really should suspend all non-essential court activity (e.g. 95% of the civil calendar) for a couple of weeks and just continue any non-jurisdictional deadlines for that period of time.
In light of the virus, Utah State Bar just cancelled the Spring St. George convention. The Arizona District Court Conference scheduled for Friday, March 13, 202, has been cancelled. In Nevada, we gather all of our Family Court attorneys together and encourage them to have a Drunken Barn Dance.
Completely irresponsible to go forward with Bishop IMO. I was scheduled to go and decided to stay in Las Vegas. Appreciate the State Bar offering to allow free access to materials for those who decided to not attend.
I've never been to the family law conference but when I was a law clerk ~15 years ago for a family law attorney here, he told me he stopped going because it ended up being a place for married attorneys to enjoy the company of other married attorneys while their spouses were back in LV. Lets hope none of the attorneys or staff get anything and spread it to every family law attorney at the conference…..
I've been to the seminar, and although the Family Law Section makes a strong effort(and are often successful) in arranging an interesting seminar with interesting and informative speakers, it's mostly all for naught as many attendees spent the daytime hours hung over(whether at the seminar or back at their hotel room), and they spend their nights
doing precisely what 10:50 suggests(after they first get drunk at the local taverns).
So,it's kind of boring for a nerdish prude like me who never gets laid(and never bothers trying), and who prefers to do his drinking in moderation and by himself.
I'm like 3:41. It's never a bad seminar, but as an older attorney who has no real interest in staying out most of the night and drinking with much younger attorneys, the evenings kind of drag.
I just grab a bite to eat and then stay in my hotel room.
And yes, it's just like 10:50 says. A few spouses have figured this out and forbid their attorney spouse from attending, unless they take them along.
Family Law Conf in Bishop cancelled.
3:44–if that's true you must mean that it has been aborted or cut short. There are attorneys who were posting on social media today that they were at the seminar.
It was aborted in the middle of the Conference. Lots of unhappy (hungover) people now going home early to the ol' battleaxe.
Bog law clerk app bummer!
With respect to R.E.M. and our blogmaster, how about incl some references to Heavy Metal like Motorhead / Pantera / Ozzy / Early FFDP or even Semblant, etc. – with apologies to Sammy Hagar there really is more than one way to rock
Alternatively: "Let the Bodies Hit for Floor" – Drowning Pool, "I'm so sick" – Flyleaf, "Down with the Sickness"- Disturbed
10:39 here, great list 12:37, if you haven't already taken a look, there is a guy "metal cover by Leo Moracchioli" who takes songs like Hello by Adele or Britney Spears, etc. and plays it heavy metal style haha, take a look on YouTube
No NHL, NBA or MLB.
Ohio closing ALL schools for next 3 weeks. Which state is next?
Ireland closed all schools.
Any Las Vegas firms go remote yet?
I thought the rumor was that Kolesar & Leatham was closing? Their website still lists most of the attorneys and they represent one of the parties in a case I'm on and are acting as if nothing happened.

Subject: CCSD Coronavirus Response Update – March 12, 2020
March 12, 2020
The Clark County School District (CCSD) continues evaluating and responding to the evolving nature of coronavirus (COVID-19) with a coalition of partners, including the Office of the Governor, Clark County Government, the Southern Nevada Health District, and other agencies, on a cohesive community response to protect the health and well-being of our students and staff. It is important to remember that, at this time, most Nevada residents are at low risk of contracting coronavirus.
For the moment, there are no planned school closures. However, should the need arise, contingency plans have been developed and continue to be refined daily. The goal of CCSD is to remain open and educate our children to provide a sense of stability for our students, employees, and families.
CCSD is taking the following actions out of an abundance of caution:
All school, district, and non-district sponsored athletics, extra-curricular activities, assemblies, practices, and events are suspended effective immediately until further notice.
Activities and events scheduled toward the end of the school year, including graduation ceremonies, will be evaluated as we progress through this situation.
Restrictions on international and out-of-state student travel remain.
At this time, Safekey, After-School All-Stars, Communities in Schools, and other programs that provide support for after-school care will continue operating to support students and families.
Salad bars will be removed from all schools, effective immediately, until further notice.
Students will continue to have numerous menu options meeting federal guidelines.
Employees should remain at their assigned work locations, and avoid unnecessary travel to other schools and district buildings, except essential personnel servicing our students.
All out-of-district consultants, including professional learning facilitators, are restricted from providing in-person services in CCSD effective immediately until further notice.
CCSD has increased the cleaning of all surfaces, as a proactive approach to preventing the possible spread of COVID-19.
At this time, the Thursday, March 12, 2020 Board of School Trustees meeting will continue as planned.
Staff has thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the board room.
Only essential personnel presenting items will attend the meeting.
The meeting will be conducted in accordance with the open public meeting law.
Live streaming of the meeting will be available on CCSD.net
We continue to refine the coronavirus response plan with all departments.
We would like to remind you of the simple actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses:
Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth
Cover cough and sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
As always, we ask that you keep your child at home from school if they may be sick, and we are asking employees who are sick to stay home.
Please visit ccsd.net for regular updates. Should a case impact a school directly, we will update parents, staff, and the community regarding next steps.

On a completely unrelated note. I have a Canadian client who will be relocating to Las Vegas. He has asked for a referral for an immigration attorney. Any recommendations?

I put "Hearing Requested" on pleadings and I get no hearing. I put "Hearing Not Requested" and I get a hearing. What is going on?
Welcome to the eighth judicial district clerk's office where we reject perfectly good documents.
First domino to fall: So if I want to participate in hearings, I am now going to be required to spend $50-$60 per hearing. Seems like an access to justice issue to me.
"- As a precautionary measure in light of public health concerns with respect to Coronavirus CoVID-19, this Court orders that any party intending to appear before Department 16 for law and motion matters between now and April 30, 2020 do so by Court-approved telephonic means only. As a result, your matter scheduled Tuesday, March 17, 2020 in this case will be held telephonically via CourtCall. You are hereby requested to make arrangements with CourtCall if you intend to participate that day. Please refer to Department 16's guidelines with regard to CourtCall scheduling"
I fully support conducting all business remotely for at least the next few weeks, but there has to be a way to make it free of charge. That is ridiculous and an access to justice issue.
This is why some departments refuse to use CourtCall and instead have parties set up telephonic appearances directly with the department. CourtCall has to just be rubbing its hands together over this.
Dept 16 CourtCall through April 30th? Damn. I have a few hearings mid-April, heavily contested. I'm sure the importance of certain arguments will make it through over a phone call of course, right?
Attorneys in other states use CourtCall with much greater frequency than we do here, and everything is fine. Make your argument, put yourself on mute any time you are not speaking. The Judge will hear the same words as if you were there in person. CourtCall is your friend.
8:40 AM,
That is just not true. Body language is lost. Apparently you don't make any effort to read the judge you're appearing in front of?
I appear on court call frequently (yes, even on contested motions!) and I've never had a problem. Anecdotal evidence, sure, but my opinion: some of y'all need to learn how to adapt.
CourtCall is fine but not the same as being in the courtroom. However the mandatory cost issue is a BIG deal. Either (1) make it free, (2) offer a free alternative as other Departments do; (3) rule that any motion that has an objection to CourtCall will be decided without oral argument or (4) rule that any motion that has an objection to CourtCall will be heard after April 30th.
My travel time alone costs multiple times what CourtCall costs. I get for legal aid and gov it's a problem, but how does this not save clients and attorneys money when they are in a firm setting?
Because you are telling me that I have to pay a 3rd party vendor if I want to have access to the court system.
