Does this apply to justice court cases as well?

Unclear. Entirely different court, not generally subject to direct control by the district court, but in the same building as the EJDC. As far as I am aware, there are no general orders for Las Vegas Township Justice Court. But as a practical matter, if the EJDC is barring entry, Justice Court I would think would necessarily be in the same boat.

I am wondering the same thing. I see justice court issued an order regarding traffic tickets and bench warrants for tickets due to this situation but nothing in regards to civil and criminal cases

Called Justice Court. Here is their response. "Your hearing for tomorrow is on. You are required to appear."

My trial for next week: "Your trial is on. You are required to appear."

11:25 a.m., so the Justice Court has taken the head-in-sand approach. That's good.

Think about it this way. Would you rather sit with counsel in District Court cases or the Great Masses that pack the galleries for a Justice Court proceeding ?

So all out of custody crim matters (minus prelims) are kicked 60 days. But prelims aren't listed as essential hearing/case type in that order. Does that mean preliminary hearings will be continued just not for 60 days as they are not listed under "essential hearings" in that order?

6:38, that is quite an ambiguity, isn't it? I would read "1. All in-custody proceedings for criminal matters" on page 2 to be inclusive of in-custody preliminary hearings. It's not clear what will become of out-of-custody preliminary hearings.

Justice Court deciding to conduct the Petri Dish that we call eviction hearings as "essential" is a farce. We care about disease but have no issue with a packed courtroom of virus-carriers sitting on top of one another.

I am the head of a small firm (5 lawyers or less). Aside from all of the existential worry, I see these big employers closing their doors and promising to pay staff for weeks of furlough. I don't think we have the money for 8 weeks of salaries and rent while staff sits home. Anyone else facing this right now? Are you going to lay people off? Attorneys can work from home and write briefs and do their telephonic appearances from their cell phones if they choose. But staff I have no idea how to have them work from home.

Our firm is a little larger, but I don't think we have the money for salaries and rent for even a much shorter time than eight weeks. Wow. This is terrible. Makes 2008 look like nothing.

Transition to web based document management. Depending on what your staff does, phone calls can be forwarded and staff can access these programs from anywhere.

A few offices are doing the same thing. Mostly bc attorneys have the capability to work from home and still get everything done. Support staff in a lot of cases, can't.

I am working from home, but going in a few times a week to sign things.

I will wade into the political waters: I am damn glad that we have Anthony Fauci on that stage. In crisis, I want someone at the helm who knows what he is going. I believe he knows what he is doing. I believe he is making people who do not listen to anyone ever listen to him and follow his advice.

At a certain point won't we all be exposed to this? If so, how does shutting everything down flatten the curve (prevent a spike in those affected that will overwhelm health care services)? Those needing hospitalization will be delayed, maybe, and then will spike when people need or feel safe to come out of the house. Perhaps this is needed to give time to prepare? I don't know. It's going to be tough financially though if everything comes to a halt.

The goal of "flattening the curve" is only partly to reduce the total number of infections. It's also to spread the number of infections over a longer period of time. If your hospital can handle 30 acute cases of pneumonia a week, there's a major difference between having 300 cases over 3 weeks versus 30 cases a week for 10 weeks. The latter allows the hospital to provide adequate care for all. Also, the latter gives those who recover in the first few weeks the immunity they need to slow down the infection rate in the general population.

To see this graphically, https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/

I get it. But won't this just delay a spike in the future, given that most have mild symptoms and will spread the virus when the coast seems clear? Or will everyone have to be in lock down for a year?

I've got a curve you can flatten, Fauci. That little turd is Kate McKinnon's SNL gravy-train, and our economic grim reaper. Should have never handed the keys to the country over to the CDC…they don't know how to drive.

No. The goal is to avoid the spike or spread the spike so that it stays within manageable levels. Say we have 100 ICU beds. If the present trajectory is that we will have 50 cases next week and then 150 case and then 300 cases and then 1000 cases over the next 4 weeks, the system will be flooded by 1500 cases in 4 weeks and will be at 10 times capacity in 4 weeks.

If we can "flatten the curve" and spread 75 cases a week over 20 weeks, the system will spread it out over 20 weeks and never exceed capacity. Furthermore the developments make a treatment more likely 20 weeks from now than having it be necessary so much sooner.

Drastically reducing the number of encounters with infected persons or things will slow the rate of growth. Slowing the rate of growth is all about not overwhelming the healthcare system. If you successfully make as many people hunker down at home as possible and keep contacts controlled to people who have been successfully isolated from infection, the spread of the virus will slow. That will give those who do become infected the time to develop their own immunity to it, meaning those people won't be able to get the same strain again and won't (we hope) be capable of spreading it once they've developed immunity. And for those who develop severe symptoms, due to age or other underlying health conditions, they will get the intensive care they need.

A problem we're facing is with a totally botched testing regime. By the time you have the evidence of where the virus is and where it's spreading, evidence needed to impose draconian measures, the virus is already in the wild and spreading uncontrollably.

You're right with regard to our local economy since such a high percentage of it is concentrated in gaming and tourism. We are, unfortunately, very sensitive to economic downturns. Hotels won't get back those unsold rooms. Casinos won't recoup those unplaced NCAA basketball bets. But for regions where the economy is more diverse, the impact won't be as great. Manufacturing, agriculture, and tech are less sensitive to sharp economic moves. The things that aren't being bought now are still needed and will bought in the future. The aggregate national economy will suffer some; but it will be less severe than our local economy and will bounce back sooner.
