Implosion

  • If you’ve been following along in the comments, you’ve heard a few nuggets about what’s going on a Lionel Sawyer & Collins, including that the venerable firm is not just downsizing or contracting, it’s imploding. It seems their website is up and running again, but we got a tip that their attorney page no longer lists direct dial numbers–just the main switchboard extension. Take that for what you will…
  • Here’s a little legal analysis fun for you. Two men were throwing rocks at a beehive, angering the bees who attack everyone around and send three people to the hospital. No charges were filed yet, but if they are, what crimes did the two men commit? [MyNews3; KTNV]
  • People in Northwest Vegas who are regularly affected by flooding are looking to sell their homes. [8NewsNow]
  • Today is the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. Meanwhile, here in the U.S., we still have thousands of nuclear weapons in aging facilities. [Last Week Tonight with John Oliver via Huffington Post]

I grew up in the Robindale/Eastern area in the 70's. There were several occasions where you either couldn't go home or leave home because of flooding. It never lasted more than a day. Now I live near Grand Teton and it floods some but it's not that bad. They are in the middle of digging up Grand Teton to put in storm drains so it will get better.

Yeah, I live near Grand Teton too. I'd gladly put up with a flooded road 2-3 times a year since it also comes with the low crime, mild traffic, and overall awesomeness that is Centennial Hills. Wait 5 years and the Mt. Charleston fauna will come back to life, greatly helping the flooding problem, to say nothing of that huge storm system they're putting in now. (And even if it doesn't, all that runoff will become the problem of the development that will be built at Grand Teton and Grand Canyon.)

More of a "juice farm" then a force to be reckoned with, IMO. They've been a bit top-heavy as far as partners-associates go for a while now, and not all of the partners were making it rain…

In all honesty, is it possible for a firm like LSC to implode, short of a bankruptcy? I just counted 48 attorneys on their website (I was bored). I'm guessing it would take some of the most important partners leaving and taking their clients (and probably some associates) to destroy it. Are there any partners at LSC with that kind of power?

If LSC is shedding personnel this rapidly, they are in horrid shape (and even without bankruptcy it would constitute an implosion). At a certain point, the firm will lose its identity even if it continues to operate. The closest Nevada has come to a Biglaw firm will not have the bodies or the expertise to continue to operate in the same way. Even if enough partners with strong books stay, you can count on structural changes being made to the firm. If LSC can pull out of this swan dive, it will be a long while before the firm feels strong enough to expand again to its previous size. If not enough strong partners stay, LSC will go the way of Santoro Driggs–a great firm at the time but that is now a shell of itself.

What? A partner didn't show up with 3 associates at a garden variety Family Law hearing and now the firm has imploded?

There seems to be a pattern with local firms when they get top heavy to implode and not expand? Anyone else seeing this pattern?

I believe 8:24 is right . The real question is, who is next? This is Vegas, any bets?

I'd love for them to join Jones Vargas at Fennemore Craig. That would be a lot of ego under one roof.

Is no one going to take the bee hive battery challenge?

"what crimes did the two men commit?" OOH, OOH, CALL ON ME, I KNOW THIS ONE!!! Well Alex, my answer is, "What is stupidity in the third degree?"

Winnie The Pooh gets a pass for poking bees, but he's a bear of very little brain. What's the excuse for these brainiacs?

For a (semi) serious answer, NRS 203.119 was a possibility until I read it was not in or around a public building. NRS 206.040 is a long shot, but whoever's tree it was the beehive was in would, I assume, have to sign a complaint. There's actually an entire chapter on bees (honest!) NRS Chapter 552, but not a peep about boping a natural hive. NRS 574.100? I dunno, call the ASPCA.

That's it, that's all I got.

Anyone know of the shake up going on at the law office of Hall & Oates? Heard major changes are coming.

Say It Isn't So! I know one attorney there, and he is a real Family Man. They have a real culture of Be What You Want, Be Who You Are. It's too bad they will be gone. But, sometimes break ups happen and then there's Starting All Over Again. When the Morning Comes, they will think She's Gone, and it will be true …

You are so OUT OF TOUCH and you don't MAKE MY DREAMS COME TRUE. Maybe they will hire some PRIVATE EYES to find the missing MANEATER partner. I need to get back to work now.

Sorry @3:22 but Maneater was on Hall and Oates 1982 H2O album and reached # 1 on Billboard. I had to look it up thank God. If I actually knew this without looking it up I would be ashamed.

Looks like 2014 is the year of the firm fall apart.
