I have had this discussion with reporters from the R/J for years. Stop putting sentences like the following in stories “The monetary amount sought by the former teacher wasn’t clear, but the lawsuit said the plaintiff had been ‘damaged in an amount far in excess of’ $15,000.” The $15,000 threshold is a jurisdictional thing. You are not going to know the exact amount of the claim in District Court (you will in Justice Court). Putting sentences like this tell the reader nothing and feeds the perception that every District Court complaint is for $15,000.

I am confused by your claim of reader confusion. That particular sentence you quote is very clear.

I agree with 11:56. I almost gave you a “yawn” OP but I see you are trying to help.

i understood what OP is saying. Every news story claims that its a lawsuit for $15,000, We as lawyers know that the $15,000 jurisdictional allegation pursuant to NRCP 8(a) really communicates nothing regarding the amount in controversy.

Running Red Lights
“McMahill has called for installation of traffic cameras”

Not a fan, privacy concerns etc.
Notwithstanding, I understand that it is relatively easy to defeat a traffic cam by buying a plastic film or sheet to put over your license plate. Reportedly, this prevents the camera from “seeing” the plate number. The plate remains readable by an officer directly behind the vehicle, but not from a camera at an angle to the plate.

I’m going with no, we are not talking about a front plate because the comment specifically referred to the plate being readable by an officer directly behind the vehicle.

What about just stopping at a red light?

Nearly every license plate spray, cover, or film for defeating cameras have been shown completely ineffective. Those that do work are bulky and, according to my metro buddies, they know what they look like and it’s a guaranteed traffic stop if they see one.

Its called a fresnel lens and attached to the inside of a clear plate cover is virtually undetectable from a human in a vehicle looking at you.

It works as well. Been using them to dodge Express lane Toll Cameras on the 91 in Cali for years. Also, was a little panicked when I got pulled over for speeding last year between Baker and Barstow. Got a warning for the speeding and he didn’t say jack about the lens.

Red light cameras don’t work. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/red-light-cameras-may-not-make-streets-safer/ I wouldn’t be surprised if one of McMahill’s donors owns a monitoring company or something. The evidence is there that they’re not effective in making streets safer.

Anyone who stops on a through lane coming off the freeway so they can try to cross multiple lanes of traffic to make a left-turn rather than just drive half a block further deserves lots of horn honking.
