They used to be called Bailiffs. They used to be cool. Now it's just another punchcard position for PERS monkeys. Pity.

Because "Bailiff" sounds soooo much cooler than "Marshal"

I see they are recruiting ex military people as well. I wonder if He who shall not be named would pass the background.

@ 10:16 am – I disagree. The marshals I've dealt with are decent people and they keep the building safe. There are a lot of challenges to dealing with people under stress coming and going from RJC. I'd lot rather have them there than not. Just pick up a newspaper or think of the horrible tragedy at the federal building a while back. So easy to criticize. Why not say thank you, good job, grateful to you, something like that.

They have to deal with all sorts of unsavory and potentially dangerous characters coming through the front door – some of whom are criminal defendants, gang members, you name it. I don't blame them for having a certain amount of attitude. On the other hand, I don't enjoy being talked to like a criminal either, so I use the South entrance whenever possible.

Has anyone seen the Supreme Court order regarding the marshals? I'm curious as to whether they address separation of powers issues re: changing the PERS rules. I also wonder if there is truly a shortage of people who will do that job. It seems like in this economy that there would be plenty of people who would apply.

In order to get retired or ex- law enforcement who make the best marshals it seems, they had to waive the PERS problem. The PERS problem is that the Marshal has to forego their PERS while working for less at the courthouse. Essentially, the Marshal are the court's police and security. There has been a problem for a while. It seems the ones that don't have the PERS problem get picked up by another law enforcement agency where they can make more money.
