How much of our tax dollars have been wasted by incompetent (and possibly corrupt) government officials refusing to comply with the rights of the residents of Nevada? I cannot believe this case is at the supreme court when the result (again) is obvious. There needs to be consequences for the bureaucrats. If it is incompetence, fire them. Bad Lands is the worst but all these police, coroner, CCSD cases etc. that are protecting bad actors are really disgusting. Why do govts protect their worst employees at the expense of the public?

The natural tendency of an organization is to protect the organization in the same way the natural tendency of the individual is to protect the individual. Those instincts can often be counter-productive. In this case Sparks wants to avoid making it seem like all their cops are perverts who take advantage of their position but end up looking like they want to protect abusive cops from the consequences of their actions. Are there cases where publicizing the specific evidence and methods from an investigation will do concrete harm? Of course, but a bright line rule that prohibits disclosure in all active investigations looks like it provides cover to bad cops and bad police departments. Hopefully NVSC agrees.
It’s active criminal investigation files. They’re not public records until there have been charges. Are we now going to allow criminals to view the ongoing progress of the investigation against them so they can obstruct and destroy evidence? Criminal justice reform only makes us lawless. Let the police do their job. Once a person is charged the file is turned over and then the defendant can disclose whatever the hell they want.
How is keeping active criminal investigations private protecting bad actors? What a load of nonsense.

Re: Bar Exam suit. I remember taking the CA Bar Exam in the mid 2010s and one of our fellow test takers had some sort of major medical episode. Right at the end of the day, there was an announcement by the proctor they were aware of an episode and it would not affect the test.

Laws need to change to have decision makers have some skin in the game when they are wrong and attorneys fees are accrued.
