In Family Court Department J we have Rena G. Hughes challenging Judge Kenneth E. Pollock (who only had 40% of respondents recommend retaining in the RJ 2013 Judicial Performance Evaluation). In Family Court Department L, Judge Jennifer L. Elliot (who was the target of the late Lisa Willardson’s judicial ambition for her absenteeism) is seeking keep her spot on the bench against Paul “Mitch” Gaudet. In Department M, Judge William Potter is up against James Stuart (who was recently suspended from appearing in bankruptcy court).
It's very interesting when you put up three of these polls and one of them gets way more votes than the other two… what could possibly be going on there?
Voting for Pollock. I think he tries to do the right thing and gets my vote. He shows no favorite. The RJ survey results are skewed. Only a handful of attorneys complete the surveys. In Pollock's case, don't know the exact number but I heard it was less than 100 or so. There are several hundred Family Law practitioners but even very few of them participated. I wish I would have completed the survey. He would have received high marks.

I wouldn't vote for Judge Pollock if he were running against Elizabeth Halverson (RIP).
What 10:49 said. Pollock is sooooo bad. I was delighted to see a sr judge on the bench…what a relief! Pollock is lazy and condescending. I'd say he's got his minion(s) on here voting for him because I don't know anybody who actually likes appearing in front of him.
I think Elliot is a good judge. I never feel like she's making the wrong decision and I think she has great demeanor on the bench. She can be tough, but she's also fair and she recognizes the idiosyncrasies of family law cases. I am also sick of the judges in family court who like to jerk people around. Elliot doesn't do that. She's very cognizant of the fact that it's real lives she is dealing with.
I don't think Potter is a bad judge, I just think he's an a-hole. I absolutely cannot stand his demeanor. When he starts yelling in court I cringe. It's so unprofessional and completely unbecoming for a judge. I can't count the number of times I've had to babysit clients outside his court room because he scares them so bad. It's really uncalled for. And it sets a tone with his staff. His court clerk is ok, but the rest seem to have adopted his nasty attitude.
I agree with you on Potter. Not a bad judge as far as his decision-making and legal knowledge are concerned, but part of being a judge should be maintaining a respectful demeanor. There's no need to yell in every other hearing. It doesn't do any good and makes the whole process more adversarial than it needs to be. We deal with enough jerks as opposing counsel, we don't need another one facing us on the bench.
I agree with 2:57 pm and 9:06am. I'll add that I lost a lot of respect for Potter when during a motion hearing on one of my cases he stated for me to tell him what I was seeking for my client as he hadn't read the brief. The brief was pretty clear what the client was seeking. Given that it wasn't a busy calendar that day, if he needed more time to review or read the filings for whatever reason he could have simply continued the matter. Ultimately I got my client what they needed but I lost a lot of respect for him (and this is on top of his demeanor).
Really mediocre candidates.
Rena Hughes lacks the experience and is not very friendly at all. During speeches she touts being a 'certified' family attorney. However she fails to mention who certified her and what the criteria for certification is. Regardless of the certification Rena still has less experience than Judge Kenneth Pollock and whether she thinks that she can do better than him or not, he has a diversity of experience is multiple practice areas, which gives him a broader scope of understanding to discern and administer the law. My vote is for Ken Pollock, 'A man and a name you can trust.'
Ridiculous. "A man and a name you can trust." In quotes? Was that supposed to indicate sarcasm? What does that even mean?
Pollock had zero family law experience when he took the bench. I'll take 25 years experience over ZERO. And BTW, only the State Bar of Nevada certifies attorneys. Do your research.
What about the hundreds of paternity and child support cases Pollock litigated in the early years of his career? He has been licensed in other places besides Clark County during his long career. Someone should check their facts.
Seriously? That's just blatant campaign lackey posting. Ken Pollock looks like a furby, nice guy but he just wants to be a judge, he doesn't care where and he is clearly out of his element over in family court, aka crazy town
You hit it on the head, he's a nice guy, but very difficult to have any respect for as a judge. He'd be perfect as a traffic court judge. Nice set of rules for him to flaunt, but still exercise his discretion and not many lawyers have to deal with him.
Pollock has been on medical leave for two months, but he is out campaigning. Senior judges are filling in for him, at taxpayers' cost. He was going door-to-door in Laughlin this week, soliciting votes. Is this "a man and a name you can trust?" VOTE HIM OUT.
Saw person handing out literature. Is Judge Pollock in his late seventies? If not then it was definitely not him who was going door to door. Maybe a volunteer? Someone definitely needs glasses.
Can somebody find out which judges have had senior judges filing in for them all the time. According to this blog, it seems senior judges have been filling in for a lot of judges to handle their calendar. There is no problem if a judge is sick to have senior judges filling in for them for a short term medical necessity. But when it becomes a regular practice then it is a concern. Especially if we have an election.
It would be interesting to know how many times Senior Judges have been called upon to fill in for Judges, while they are out campaigning. Nice that the tax payers are paying for Senior Judges to fill in so that those up for election can leave work and attend campaign events.
This is for the current calendar and future calendar (forward from today). What about the calendar for the year and the year before? The data has to be derived somehow. Any suggestions? What about for a certain Department? Maybe the blog can run a story/topic on this.
how we do summon reporter Bethany Barnes here @betsbarnes?
This has to be a Rena Hughes post. You have to campaign whether you are sick or not.
This seems like a strange statement. If you are healthy enough to campaign, you are healthy enough to do the job you are campaigning to keep.
