With primary ballots set to start arriving in mailboxes next week, it’s time to talk about some of the contested judicial primary races featured on that ballot. We welcome your comments on the qualifications of the candidates as well as any information you can offer to help voters make an educated decision. Just remember to keep your comments appropriate and try to avoid defamation.
For District Court Judge, Family Division, Department Y, the candidates are:
- Maricar “Rica” Andrade
- Stephanie Charter
- Kari Molnar
Molnar seems to be the most experienced in Family Court, and could probably hit the ground running.
Andrade appears to serve reasonably well as an Alternate TPO Hearing Master(which she has served in consistently for a few years). Also, she has a fair degree of experience as a family Law practitioner.
Ms.Charter does not appear to have a huge amount of Family Court experience.
She was, however, apparently running the most spirited and effective campaign of the three, at least until the pandemic hit.
Have you guys seen Ms. Andrade's judicial campaign advertisements? If not, please seek them out on Facebook. They induce cringe and, for me, hurt her image. I don't want to be too hard on the ads, since they could mean only that she didn't have the money, or believe it was necessary, to hire a campaign manager. I've met her a couple times, she seems nice.
I like them, personally. That's as good a reason to vote for a Family Court judge as any. Thanks for making me look. I'm sold!
Nothing different than what Miley has been doing for the past couple of decades. This is Vegas, after all.
I am not a fan of what can best be described (kindly) as dirty dancing videos. Not very judicial IMO.
I did not care for them. It seemed childish and the ads seem more geared towards a competition for a young high school student beauty contest. While she is beautiful, that does not show me why she would be a good choice in a family court of law.
Has Charter ever once in her career handled the types of cases heard in family court?
This is Stephanie Charter and yes, I have handled all types of Family Law matters. I practiced in Family Law exclusively in St. George, Utah for several years while my family and I resided there. I handled divorce, custody, guardianship, adoption, and surrogacy matters as well as parent representation in dependency cases. I am also fortunate to count well-respected Family Law attorney Ishi Kunin as one of my mentors. In addition, I have many years experience in child welfare. Notably, three of the six new judicial seats are for child welfare judges since they will no longer have hearing masters in those slots. I was a children's attorney for legal aid for many years handling exclusively child abuse and neglect cases. In addition, I was a deputy district attorney in Clark and Washoe Counties handling child abuse and neglect cases including Termination of Parental Rights Trials. This experience is unique in my race and among all of the Family Court candidates. Overall, I have practiced for 29 years and am admitted to the bar in 4 states. If you have further questions or comments, I invite you to contact me directly at stephanie@charter4judge.com. Thank you.
Stephanie: Here is my question. You state that you been a practicing lawyer for 29 years. Admitted Arizona 2017. Utah 2009. Nevada 1994. California December 1991. At the risk of resurrecting Amber Candelaria, which one of those states includes 29 years of practice?
Here's a piece of unsolicited campaign advice for Ms. Charter. Do not say, "I have practiced for 29 years." Instead: "I have practiced for nearly 30 years." It has two benefits. First, you gain a decade of experience (30 vs. what would be heard as 20), without having to age one single day. Second, people can't quibble that there was something you were doing at some point in the 29 years between 1991 and today that would not qualify as the "practice of law." You are running for judge, not chief accountant.
Thank you, I truly appreciate this well-reasoned advice-unsolicited or not! And I apologize for any confusion/irritation caused by my choice of wording and poor math skills. I am also happy to answer any specific questions via my campaign email regarding my personal and work experience that are relevant to this seat.
Molnar is not easy to work with. I don't think she has the temperament for the bench.
Agreed. She will be a monster. I'm anyone but Molnar on this one.
I know nothing about these three people.
I have been watching campaign and business videos for all three of these candidates. I will be really open and just say Maricar Andrade is out for me just based upon her videos. Very poor choice in my eyes. I've seen Stephanie Charter's videos and her comments here and found them to be well worded and I like the temperament I saw expressed. I am curious to the comments from those judging Molnar as not easy to work with, will be a monster, etc? Can either or you express why you feel that way? I've watched a few of her videos on her Molnar Family Law Business and she seems well spoken and a reasonable person. Can you describe a little more your experience with her that makes you feel she is a poor choice?
For those of you wondering what is going on with Ms. Andrade FB videos
– She is dancing about 20 feet from the camera and nothing lewd or provocative
– Seem similar to Alexandria Ocosio-Cortez's (AOC) dancing before her campaign, but even more tame than AOC's
– I expect she is doing it to communicate she is a Democrat
Ms. Charter clearly stated above that she worked in St. George for many years
– She is obviously communicating she is a Republican
I think they are both equally qualified and I will use this this to make my final decision. Thought others may need it as well….Since they are both making their affiliations very obvious.
