In this profession, you run into people like Steve sometimes, albeit on a smaller scale. Arrogant, self-important narcissists with no introspection whatsoever. Hope this is about the last we hear of him now that he is out of the resort/gaming business.
He’s a great example of why we should not name streets after living people. I doubt he would get the honor of having a street named after him if that decision were made today. I wish the casino would rebrand so we didn’t have to see his name in lights.
Must be so painful for you.
How do you get through the day friend.
It’s very true, these same qualities sometimes get them to where they are, only to blow them up. It’s a feature and a bug.
You all might not be old timers. I’ve been here since early 70s and no one did more to build this city. Not even close. All humans are imperfect as is he. Also it takes some narcissism to focus on the big dreams he had. No go back to work for your clients who work for the businesses that exist bc of the economy that Wynn built. Enjoy the pay you get bc of Wynn. Stop judging by your current morals and presentism. Yes, he is an insufferable bore but give some credit.
“Stop judging by your current morals and presentism.”
This wasn’t Thomas Jefferson owning slaves in the 18th century. This was alleged misconduct just a few years ago. Stop it. 9:53 AM, were you not aware that this alleged misconduct was improper at the time Wynn allegedly engaged in it? Were you trapsing around town doing the same things to your employees and subordinates in innocent ignorance? How is it that you were aware that this alleged behavior was wrong, at the time, but Wynn wasn’t?
PS- Yes, there is someone who did FAR more to build this town than Steve Wynn, Kirk Kerkorian. Steve Wynn mimicked Kerkorian and Jay Sarno. Those guys were the real visionaries for Las Vegas, not Wynn. You should know that.
You know what you never hear about Kirk Kerkorian? That he sexually assaulted or in any way mistreated his employees. Far from it. If you’ve been around as long as you say you have, you’ll remember that Kerkorian came out of pocket personally to pay employees after the MGM fire. Then he also personally funded the litigation against the insurance companies so that the victims of the fire could obtain a full recovery. That’s the guy we should all be thanking for building this town, yourself included. Not Wynn.
Op here. Yes, you are correct with Sarno etc. I was focusing on the Wynn comment. I wish I had time to debate. Bottom line is it just irritates me for modern critics of the ones that built this city when they weren’t in the arena. It’s so easy to criticize but I guess in 50 years we’ll see if the blog critics are having their works discussed then.
I’ll tell you what irritates me. The implication that success in business absolves sexual misconduct. That’s nonsense, even if you try and prop it up with a ridiculous presentism argument.
You’re right, but it’s more than just “success absolves misconduct.”
It’s the implication that success *necessitates* misconduct, which is even worse. Like, you can’t be a successful businessman without sexually assaulting some of your employees?
E.g., OP’s statement “Also it takes some narcissism to focus on the big dreams he had.”
I was a DA in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
Women told us what Wynn was requiring of them and nobody pursued it.
was it 120 words a minute?
If Jay Sarno was born in the 50’s instead of the 20’s, his name would also be mud. In addition to being a man of many vices (alcohol, gambling, etc.), he was known as a prolific womanizer
I do not wish to make light of how anyone dies, but Jay Sarno’s death just can’t be passed over. It’s comedy gold. The dude died of a heart attack at Caesars Palace while banging a hooker after snorting coke. His final moments were a caricature of his entire life. Don’t tell me God doesn’t have a sense of humor.

Moe Greene should have straightened Jay Sarno out.
And he had a gorgeous wife and wasn’t it 7 children?
“All humans are imperfect”
Yeah, I drive 80mph on the freeway in a 65. I don’t sexually assault people.
You’re just splitting hairs now! 😉
tomato tomaahhto
Speeding to that degree shows a callous disregard for all life and although not everyone who speeds is a sex offender I bet every sex offender speeds.
This is just a lame take. Its absolutely possible to drive above the nonsense arbitrary speed limits and not endanger the world.
Wynn did some good stuff but also did bad stuff. Regardless of any contributions to the growth of Vegas, his case was not grounds to substantially overhaul/overturn Times v. Sullivan.
Times v. Sullivan’s days are numbered. This is what Trump wants and he will get it.
Unfortunately I agree. It’ll go 7-2. Kagan is on board.
I don’t really think about Steve Wynn at all. He can have all the credit in the world. Doesn’t seem like he has a case or a Court interested in changing the law to give him one.
By my read, the issue is a little more nuanced than simply overturning Times, as it also involved Times’ interplay with Nevada’s Anti-SLAPP statute. Although Wynn suggested Times should be overturned based upon the world we now live in, he largely argued the unworkability of Nevada’s Anti-SLAPP statute requiring him to establish actual malice at the outset of the case and without full discovery.
Other than a 7A issue tacked on at the end, the cert petition didn’t even try to say there’s a circuit split. Good on Todd for getting paid but there was a 0% chance the Court was going to want to wade into these minor state-law wrinkles.
So, Real Water used to hold their company “retreats” in the conference room of a law office in which I worked. They told me their water was alkaline and therefore better than regular water. I said, “Well the next time you have one of your retreats, make certain to bring some!”
If only Marlboro had their retreats at the same time at the same location.
That’s like mining industry lecturing on clean air or DH teaching ethics. Brent was a different kind of guy.
