RE: Sheriff: I am not a fan of the coronation of McMahill or the Establishment Roberts. So far, I like Hyt the best. The connection to (or support for) the Constitutional Sheriffs & Peace Officers Association (CSPOA) seals it for me.

Thanks for this. I wasn't planning on voting for sheriff but I'll look into Hyt.

Roberts is a stand up person. He is a moderate Republican. I have found him to be a man of his word. You may not agree with him on certain things, but he tells you the truth and is principled. Not familiar with the other 2 candidates.

Roberts was crap as our District 13 Assemblyman. Went Uniparty and often voted contrary to his base. Very much like his predecessor. I don't trust him as sheriff either.

1:17 should a legislator always vote with his base? He voted the way he said he would vote. If you didn’t like his views why vote for him? Granted, no one is going to agree with everything you or I think is right.

Thanks, 12:03. The connection to the CSPOA seals it for me. No chance in hell I'll consider Hyt if he wants to indicate a connection to Joe Arpaio. Tom Roberts served me well in the Assembly.

117 here. Nonetheless. He didn't rep my district, the way that he promised or even the way that I thought he should as a Republican. Therefore, I won't be supporting or voting for him for Sheriff.

Could “a number of different factors” include that the District Attorney’s office is apparently losing attorneys by the dozen?

Isn't Scheible the one who the NVSC recently told she could not serve as both senator and DA? Maybe her leaving us as simple as that? (I can't read the RJ article behind the paywall.)

The dissenters said that Scheible could not serve as both senator and DA. I suspect she waited to announce her departure so she would not moot the case.

The RJ keeps mentioning that two Supreme Court justices ruled she couldn't hold two offices. They do mention that it was in a dissent but the paper never goes into what the majority opinion was. (Purposely?) confusing nonlawyers

Why are folks leaving DAs office? Being forced out? Most who leave have some kind of issue going on.

Their office has fewer staff every year despite Vegas getting bigger every year. The county doesn’t want to acknowledge that this is a real city with a real crime problem, easier to pretend it’s still the 1980’s and staff accordingly. That’s gotta be brutal on the prosecutors.

Staff at DA's Office–Staffing has been a problem but DAs hold the cards and can plea away or dismiss cases. The pay is pretty good and so are the benefits. DAs leaving in droves and going where–private practice??

That’s a bit terrifying really. I don’t want the DA’s just dismissing all the cases because they can’t retain staff. I don’t want to live somewhere where crime isn’t prosecuted.

Comes with the territory when living in a low tax state. DAs and PDs have a ridiculous amount of cases assigned to them. It's just about impossible to keep up with all of them unless you're working 80 hours a week so unfortunately many get dismissed or pled down.

Not as bad for PD as DA. DA has intake (screening-charging), victim assistance (victim's rights) and no restriction on caseloads. They have more work because they get to see all the cases and have the burden on bringing the cases. Most DAs work sensible hours and so do PDs. PDs have panel counsel and conflict off a lot of cases. DA not so much.

I weep for the poor DAs who are so overburdened, and yet can no nothing with the discretion provided to them. They are condemned to toil day after day, prosecuting jaywalking and HOV violations, with no end in sight. Won't someone think of the poor DAs?

Landlords are bad people, rent is going up so much in this valley. What is wrong with our society where we let those at the top have so much control? I hope every tenant who has their rent raised unleashes termites lol

You're in the wrong country. Free market capitalism is responsible for your salary. The laws of supply and demand are eternal and your crying about it changes nothing. OH. and as a Landlord, for every tenant that vacates and causes damage (termite or otherwise) that cost gets recouped in the form of…..wait for it……higher rents for the next guy. YOU are a bad person.

Bad landlords are bad people. Most landlords are good people who work with good tenants (whether through the pandemic or reasonable rental increases in line with inflation). Bad tenants deserve no assistance. What is difficult is that inflation rate is presently about 8.5%, so a $1500 least going up $120 is not out of the market.

My base rent was around $1800 and was increased to over $2200 for a July renewal. It was a more than 20% jump and grossly disproportionate to prior rent increases, and I have colleagues and clients who were slammed even harder this year. It's rough out there.

250 here. Costs go up, prices go up. Again, its capitalism. Landlords were bent over during the pandemic. We are recouping our losses in line with market prices. Its not just inflation, availability is very thin.

I have a property vacant now and over a dozen takers. Begging me is not to hyperbolic a description. As of this moment, I have been offered $800 over the last lease rate for this SFD 2200 sq. ft. property. This offer is in direct competition with the guy that wants to pay a $500 increase with 6 months paid in advance.

4:02, how long was the rent at $1800? If it was there for about 3 years, then yeah, that 20% increase to $2200 was about in line with inflation.

I had a 20% increase in rent as well with a 20% reduction in customer service. Landlords are generally terrible. Eat the rich.

There is no question there are shitty landlords. Pick a good landlord; be a good tenant. And be prepared to move with the market. $1800-$2200 is a 22% increase which over an 18-24 month lease is in line with the market. If you want to complain that wage inflation is not keeping pace with price inflation, on this point I will agree. But the market bears what the market bears right now on rents. So long as it is not gouging ($2200->$6500) let the market work.

Yes, socialism and communism are great ideas that have never been tried! They would certainly lead to overall prosperity for "workers" and all. Great bread lines! Make sure and waive at me 2:43 and 12:02 – as you drive by my summer dacha on your way to your communal flat, shared by the other 16 "workers" I cant believe in 2020 there are still people that advocate for socialism and/or communism…. I guess its to be expected, since there are still crazy people that advocate for fascism.

What exactly was wrong with Titoism? Peace and prosperity, while it is unfortunate the atrocities that occurred after his death, those can be primarily blamed on Serbia and Milosovic. Tito had some good ideas.

Just left a family court hearing. Family court is becoming more and more a joke daily. I didn’t think it could get worse, but it is getting worse. Some Judges are just lazy and don’t want to make decisions.

Based on the limited amount of family court work I do, being a judge there is a thankless job. There are some good attorneys in family law for sure, but there are also a lot of yahoos.

I doubt 9:04 bothered to read the article, or the cited sources. They likely don't know the background it lays out. I suspect the knee jerk reaction to the source means they reject the possible truth of the headline so I wonder which parts of the link language they dispute? That Jones is not scandal plagued? Not accused of passing an ordinance that harmed a political rival?

Totally agree. However, the GP article is rife with hyperbole and unnecessary adjectives in order to hit the point home. Rather than just sticking to the facts as they occurred and as reported in the RJ (cited) and the filings in the Court case.

The subject matter is true, the delivery is at least marginally biased right. Calling it a rag, doesn't detract from the facts contained there and only highlights that you didn't read the article because of its source.

When I indicate that I wont take the Current at face value, its only after I read the article.

You're both right. GP is generally trash, and 8:00 is right that the article is terribly written to try to drive home a desired conclusion. But that's not saying that the conclusion in wrong.
