A Noble Profession

  • Law

Once in awhile law is referred to as a noble profession, but most of the time we don’t get any respect. Lawyers tend to get lumped together as a group of blood-sucking vultures who serve no useful purpose to society. Of course, we know better than that. We know that lawyers are not as bad as the few that grab the public’s attention with negative headlines. That said, there are definitely some areas of law that get more respect than others and we want to know which practice areas you perceive those to be. If someone getting into the law was looking for the most respectable practice area in Las Vegas, what would you tell them?

What is the most respectable practice area in Las Vegas?

I agree, that area of practice has kept many lawyers gainfully employed. It should be on the list.

That's the exclusive domain of Stubbo/Stubbs or whatever we can think of to call him

PI – ambulance chasers / insurance shills.
Crim – Don't care if a person if innocent/guilty, as long as you get the win.
Family law – Everyone lies in Family court. Everyone.
Intellectual property – IP trolls shaking down companies / Big companies trying to force little ones to pay for everything. Plus, you know, Righthaven.
Construction Law – If you build it, lawyers will come.
Business Law – Whoever bills the most at the end, wins.
Probate / Trust Law – You can keep your money from the government or from the lawyers. Pick one.
Damn, my profession sucks.

This post is sad, but accurate.

Nice summation! I needed a good laugh this morning. We need to add bankruptcy too:

Bankruptcy: I want all my debts gone but I get to keep ALL my stuff, exempt or not and if I tell you I have nonexempt stuff don't you dare tell the trustee.

Well said. Bankruptcy court on the business side is still quite civil. Also, most true business litigators are fairly civilized.

Not to throw a turd in the punch bowl, but I almost see this as a false choice. For me, at least, it's the person that matters, not necessarily the area they practice. I can think of respectable and scurrilous nominees for each of these disciplines. A practice area is respectable if you practice it in a way that's worthy of respect. Just my 2 cents.

True, but there are trends. For example, it is no secret that the less intelligent gravitate to certain areas of law, such as family law and criminal law. It is also no secret that muckymucks prefer mucky courts, such as family court. Just sayin' not hatin'.

PI has some of the biggest losers going. There are only a select few who I would use.

I assume that this comment, and the poll above, are referencing attorneys on both sides? I didn't see Insurance Defense specifically listed, so in my mind I put both sides together. Then I selected another option.

I agree. However, sometimes when I have a douchey business client that thinks they're above the law job creators, I wish I could help someone that was actually injured get redress.

I cannot belief I am going to say this, because I tend to be plaintiff oriented, but some of the nicest attorneys I have come across are insurance defense attorneys.

I'm just a young buck, but it seems LRR has a strong incentive to publicly flog and fire this person in order to protect their image re: security and confidentiality. Or is it that it's better just to move forward and pretend it never happened? Thoughts?

I suspect the results of this poll would be quite different if you asked which practice area contributes the most to society.

I don't think blogspot is sophisticated enough to allow a poll with all negative numbers.

Personal injury attorneys contribute the most to the legal field. Without the PI Plaintiff's bar, we wouldn't have the insurance defense bar and/or some of the business bar. In that case, we wouldn't have work to grind.

Guaranteed the only people who voted for PI do PI work. Certainly there are incompetents and jerks in every area, but nowhere else does the profession sink quite as low. Better call Saul!

@ 6:48 Does it make you feel better about your shitty job doing doc review for a junior partner at a mediocre firm to think that PI attorneys are beneath you. Do you say "I may be an obsequious pee-on but at least I have principles and integrity"? "Better call Saul, hahaha" Who are you kidding? If you had the balls and the skill set to make it on your own as a PI attorney, you would crawl out of your dank little cubicle and start enjoying life. You also probably think that because you work in your mediocre little ivory tower that you're a better attorney than everyone in the PI bar. Eventually you'll learn some hard lessons and find out you're just mediocre.

2:07 – calm down, will you. I may indeed be a mediocre attorney, but you are absolutely 100% wrong about me having a "shitty job" as a "junior partner at a mediocre firm." But go ahead and believe that if it makes you feel better. I readily acknowledge there are many very good attorneys in the PI bar, and I would not hesitate to seek the services of one of the good ones if I ever need those services. Unfortunately, those attorneys don't tend to be representative of that area of practice.

60 hours a week + boring legal work + no chance of ever becoming partner + 5 CALI awards= $120,000K at big firm.

30-40 hours a week + meeting/helping people + own firm + bottom 1/3 of class = $240,000 K & up.

Decisions, decisions.
