Watching Work

  • Law

A few weeks ago, it was announced that Suits set a new streaming record surpassing the Office as the most streamed show ever. Have you ever watched the show? We hear people mentioning it often when discussing the law. Does it resonate with any of you? What legal show do you think has given the most realistic depiction of what you do for a living? Are you basically the Lincoln Lawyer in real life? Or are you in a firm that is more akin to what you see in Ally McBeal/Boston Legal type shows? Beyond the legal dramas, what shows are you watching right now that you want to rant or rave about? Anything we should be watching?

Disparity: Government asks for 100 years and you to die in jail. Defense says send him to a camp for 6 years for stealing a billion dollars. https://apnews.com/article/sam-bankman-fried-court-ftx-f6132dae6689b20f020ee3256dd4dc08

10 billion. If that’s not enough for a life sentence, then what is?

Woody was right, some people rob you with a six-shooter and some people rob you with a fountain pen.

My understanding was that actual loss was between $1B-2B. However we all know that the Feds use the fiction known as “intended loss” which could be as high as $10B.

A local attorney was sentenced to 7 years for claimed losses of $30 million. Like every single aspect of the sentence calculation from the guidelines was based on the loss estimate.

So 210 years sounds good to me, assuming a 1B loss. I mean, fair is fair, right?

Speaking of which, what is the latest on Matthew Beasley? Doug Crawford?

Jeff Skilling got 24 years. Bernie Ebbers got 25 years. There is no way that SBF is getting less than 30 years.

I’m less of a Lincoln Lawyer and more of a Better Call Saul solo, staring at the phone and willing it to ring.

Suits is pretty entertaining, at least the first season or two. Starts to just become more and more unbelievable though, so I lost interest.

I’m hooked on Better Call Saul though and have binged through the first five seasons in a week or two. Honestly, it’s a much more accurate depiction of lawyers, law firm politics, and ethical issues out of all the lawyer shows/movies I’ve seen. It’s on Netflix if you’re interested, highly recommend.

I am watching Suits (again) and as with most multi-season shows, something falls off a little after the first couple seasons. Definitely still worth watching. But, I can say that the last couple seasons it recovers and finishes strong.

Personally, I am Denny Crane, if he were a solo.

It is kind of shame. The first season writing is great. As noted, later season (for all series) falls off in quality. It is probably tough for the writers to come up with new good ideas, but honestly, it seems that once a show is a success the writers get lazy.

Overall, there are aspects of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad that are absolutely dead on. Also, I find the spirit of Michael Clayton to be true in the scene where George Clooney says something like “I’m just a janitor.”

Suits is about the least accurate portrayal of the practice of law I’ve seen on TV. How do you plead? Not-Guilty. Okay, trial starts on Monday. Every deposition is just putting someone in front of a camera and immediately yelling accusations at them. They don’t even ask questions most of the time lol. I finished the series because I felt like I had to, but the last season was awful.

Boston legal was great, although pretty repetitive. Crazy case comes in, takes a turn for the worse (often at trial), then James Spader saves the day with a once in a lifetime closing argument.

Robert California was better.

The absolute worst was the season of Daredevil where the Punisher went on trial. The court scenes bore no resemblance whatsoever as to what a trial is actually like.

If someone is in the mood for a more unconventional legal drama recommendation, I’d say watch Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix, sharing the stories and adventures of an autistic first year associate in Korea. Has a healthy dose of K-drama romance to it too, if that fits you or your S.O.’s taste.
