Assuming you are a member of the bar in Clark County (District 1), you should have received an email ballot for the Board of Governors election this morning. You can read bios here for the 10 candidates in District 1 (you can choose 4):
- Paola Armeni
- Mary Bacon
- Amber Candelaria
- Terry Coffing
- Andrew Craner
- Jessica Goodey
- Donald Green
- Scott Lachman
- Casey Quinn
- Brittnie Watkins
Feel free to discuss the candidates and speak your mind, but as a friendly reminder (since there will also be a lot of discussion about judicial candidates in coming weeks) please keep your comments work-appropriate, slander and bully free.

Many of us have connections to family and friends in Utah so I thought I would post this. I have no connection to the family or in any other way.
Both parents murdered leaving three young children: "In the early hours of Saturday morning, April 18th, an intruder came into their home and despite fighting for their lives, they were brutally shot and killed while their 3 children, ages 4 and under, slept upstairs."

Once again, I have no connection, I just know that my lawyer friends (even anonymous ones) are a caring community even in times of challenge, so I posted it.
He worked for the couple and had been let go. We don't know more than that. His wife was arrested as she apparently knew where he was and wouldn't talk. He was arrested in the Sacramento area.

I don't know any of those people, but I like Bacon, so I'm voting Mary Bacon.
I really cannot argue with this logic because, you know, Bacon.
Bacon is good, any time of the day! Go Mary!
I like bacon, too! Plus, she was pro bono attorney of the year last year. That kind of service has to be demonstrative.
Re: The election.
The bios are actually quite helpful, IMO. The candidates which promote general vague things like "excellence" tend to be those who also support things like reciprocity, status quo in disciplinary matters, and perpetual out-of-state Annual Meetings. It's just astonishing that people run for BoG without ever articulating a position on a single policy issue. FWIW, I already voted for Coffing, Lachman, Craner & Goodey. These are four candidates who have articulated specific positions on issues to protect the public and profession. There are too many people in power that are undermining the interests of the profession and the public, all while cloaking themselves in supposed pure motives.
I would be very interested in Armeni, Craner, Coffing and Goodey telling me what changes they precisely have been spearheading because frankly while they have been on BoG, nothing has changed. I see pictures of them smiling at rubber chicken Bar functions just like everyone else.
So Incumbents, tell me what good you have done and how you did not merely just become engrained in the system?
I have dealt with Jessica Goodey, so she has my vote. Armeni, no, you are the old regime along with Coffing. Lachman, I see Supreme Court on your email, no. So, who else is a good choice for change with Bogs?
Did you read their Bios? It will tell you exactly what the incumbents have or have not done. Also, what change are you looking for that should have been done?
12:07 I read each and every one of their bios and found NOTHING that answered my question of what they have spearheaded and actually accomplished. Unless you are backhandedly trying to indicate that they have accomplished nothing, in which case I agree.
9:28-I read the articles. I'm not representing that these parents were associating with criminal types, or ran afoul of some criminal types, but it seems this was a crime committed by someone who was directly targeting this couple. It is clearly not a situation where someone was burglarizing some random house, and then killed the occupants.
From what's reported robbery, did not appear to be a motive. Also, it's interesting that children were unharmed, or that the perpetrator didn't even determine if there were other people in the house.
Seems like a very personal, very targeted, pre-planned attack on specific people.
This couple was directly targeted. That appears fairly clear. The why is what we don't know yet, although it appears there are a couple suspects arrested, but no one has spoken, at east not yet. perhaps they eventually will if a deal is cut.
The accused has a long record and previously worked for the couple's landscaping company. Details as to the exact motive haven't been released, but it appears that they let him go and he came to their home and murdered them. His wife was also arrested as she mislead the police as to his location. He was arrested in the Sacramento area.
One person I will not vote for Scott Lachman. He is a Mike Cherry wannabe, who will do whatever the Nevada Supreme Court wants him to do. I used to work with him, while he is sometimes cordial, he is not someone who I would want representing me. Also, he works for Akerman, no.
Agreed. Do not vote for Lachman.
Yes, I agree as well. Lachman=Nevada Supreme Court and what ever they want. Please keep this in mind when you vote. He maybe a "mice guy," but I don't trust him or who he is affiliated with.
Terry Coffing is running for both judge and bog? I guess Marguis Aurbach is going down like Sug Knight.
The MAC troll is out again. My bet its one of the attorneys that was let go when they hired the Kolesar folks to replace them.
How is it trolling to state that two named partners are running for judge? Or that utility man, Coffing is running for judge at the same tume as BOG as a BOG. Facts are trolling? I guess Casper the ghost is running Matquis Aurbach.
Phil has been primarily practicing Resolution Management and been 'name only' for years so I don't think his running for a judge necessarily means the ship is going down.
How are businesses like the North Las Vegas drive-in allowed to open if non-essential businesses are supposed to be shut down until the end of the month?
If you read the ED that contains the shutdown order it has three categories of business: (1) essential businesses that may remain open, (2) non-essential businesses that must close or close to the public, and (3) other businesses that may remain open under certain conditions. Law firms are in this (3) category. I haven't looked at the language of the order re theaters recently but I imagine you could fit a drive-in into (3) as well.
The Governator heard about it, and decided that people enjoying themselves outside while social distancing in separate vehicles was entirely unacceptable. His office called the drive-in and told them to shut down until führer direction from the Governor's office.
Very, very nice: …until führer direction…
Thank you
Green and Amber are two of my wife's favorite colors, so I'm voting for Amber Candelaria and Donald Green. Just kidding but in all seriousness I used to do divorce law and met Amber down at the Self Help Center and she was very professional and helpful. Her conversation always focused on helping people, so we've got that (with a nod to CaddyShack, Bill Murray and the Dali Lama).
Is Amber for real, or is she just another ambitious wannabe who covets the robe? I can't tell.
I know Amber as an acquaintance. She for sure is an ambitious person and I can see this as a path to other positions. On the other hand, I do believe she is very fair and in her heart motivated by altruism. To be clear we are not friends, but I would trust her should I ever have a discipline matter, etc. to be fair. All IMHO
Every time I see her name, I can't stop from remembering when she ran for JP and claimed that because the NV Bar said she was in her fifth year as an attorney, that she had already practiced for 5 years; and took it to the top and lost. https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/news-columns/jane-ann-morrison/legislatures-lack-of-clarity-in-writing-law-leads-to-legal-challenge/
Amber loses my vote on multiple counts: (1) other than her stint at the Self-Help Center (where she was a Red Queen) and hubris attempt to push her way into a judicial seat with less than 5 years out, she really has not done much; (2) she is involved with a string of CRAZY dog pseudocharities– you know the supposed organizations that say they are helping dogs but Darcy Spears ends up outing them that they have all kinds of problems.
Since OP says that all comments must be "work-appropriate, slander, and bully free," I take it that I can only post if I'm posting slander.
And wouldn't it be libel, not slander 😉
You cannot keep your comments bully free when discussing certain judges, because certain judges are bullies.
I'm voting for Lachman. I am opposing counsel in dozens of HOA cases and worked with him for years now. Scott is a hard worker. Also a good guy and very professional.
Who cares what temple he goes to? Stop bringing your religion into it.
I'm voting for Brittney Watkins. She always effects meaningful change at the organizations she gets involved in.
Where does she stand on the issues tho? What good is "meaningful change" if it's in the wrong direction?
I'm voting for Brittnie Watkins too. She's been opposing counsel in a couple of my cases and is nice to work with.
I know Watkins, Lachman, and Bacon from young lawyers and pro bono stuff. All three are very dedicated and would be good advocates for change. I didn't know who else to vote for, but decided to give my fourth vote to Quinn.
I thought there were issues with Quinn last time. My boss was opposing counsel with Lachman on a matter, and he did not treat her well at all. I mean really bad, so this newly minted attorney is not voting for him.
You must be mistaken, newly minted attorney. 12:29 p.m. here. Lachman is one of the most easy going bank counsel there is. I don't think he has a mean bone in his body. He is honest, always willing to grant extensions, and overall a pleasure to work with. I've never had a bad experience with him, win or lose.
Yes. I am correct, but it is nice of you to dismiss me and my opinion.
Here is the problem with Scott that can make both 4:37 and 5:09 correct: he works for Darren Brenner. Scott on his own is fine. Scott with Darren cc'd on the email or involved in the decision can be unnecessarily argumentative and obstreperous.
Anyone but Quinn is what I heard.
6:38 agreed. Darren Brenner and Scott Lachman are not nice people. They are asking me to place my safety and health at risk during this pandemic, risking mine and my family's health for work.
Explain 1:44. I have cases against Akerman and know their office is working remotely.
Maybe I missed it, but did any bog applicant state their position on reciprocity?
Reciprocity is a dead issue. Not even on the agenda anymore.
Yeah, ask Dean Dan Dan Noodles.
Not true. Last week I spoke with one candidate who is gung ho for it. And trust me, Dean Dan hasn't given up on this. He wants to institute reciprocity to make it easier to recruit to UNLV, raise the US News rankings, and thereby burnish his resume/CV.
Who is positive on reciprocity? Missed it, sorry.
What is the "meaningful change" that you are looking for? at least on candidate is working on discipline.
I found Scott Lachman to be fair and cordial, easy to work with, when he was on the opposing side of one of my cases. I don't know any of the other candidates. But Scott Lachman seems like a good choice.
Armeni is cool. Coffing is brilliant. Bacon has the best name. I don't know the other ones.
I don't know anything about the election, but Brittnie Watkins is a great attorney.
Lachman is a good guy.
