Just Checking On You

  • Law

First of all, congratulations to Judge Cristina Silva and Professor Anne Traum who were conformed by the Senate yesterday. [RJ]

More importantly, how are you all doing? Spring is here and we have more daylight, but while pandemic news is pushed to the side, we are now bombarded with stories about inflation and war. How is your mental health? How are you coping? Any words of encouragement to offer to those who are struggling?

I'm running for judge, and candidly, it's exhausting and mentally and emotionally draining. I know I will be good at the job, and the bench needs someone with my experience, but the process of getting there is really kind of awful and does nothing to help people decide if I am the right person. I'm not sure the appointment process is/would be any better, but running a campaign is tough.

For the other candidates out there, how are you doing? For the people not running, send some good vibes and be kind. I promise, some of the candidates actually do want to make our courts better, but it's so hard to get that message out in an effective way while still trying to do all things we have to do to run a successful campaign.

But whether you get elected really has nothing to do with the experience you bring to the bench. Whether you are a good judge is a judicial question, whether you can get elected is entirely a political one. Effective politicians aren't necessarily effective judges and vice versa. Sometimes a person is both, sometimes they are not. Do you feel that you are both, 10:28 AM?

In any event, good luck. We need qualified people to run and few are willing.

1:43 the original poster did not say he or she can't handle it. He or she said it's a pain and not a good way to help people decide.

Why would anyone want to run for the bench? After the last election the only people running are looking for a raise. The public appears to only be concerned with the candidates sex.

LCL is dope. I grew up in rural America and was raised with a toxic masculinity mindset, which just does not work in this profession, for me anyways. Being a lawyer it hard and destroyed my mental health for a long time. There is nothing wrong with asking for help.

I'm stuck. I appreciate that I make decent money in my job, but I hate what I'm doing. I've applied for other jobs, but no one wants a used lawyer. NO interest in running for a judge and all that entails. Also don't want to give up current lifestyle. It's a vicious cycle.

I got a very well designed SPAM email from Litigation Support Group today. I tried calling their number, left a voice mail for verification, yet have have received no return call from them. I'm 99% sure it's spam, but a call back from them for verification would be nice.

Troy Peyton got rung up for $8 Million. Could even say that they took the cleaning chemicals to his clock.

Um, good? I read the story and wow. What kind of top tier morons work at that place? I would have added another zero had I been on the jury.

It would be interesting to find out about the pre-trial offers and demands, which presumably we will if they beat an OJ. $8m would have probably been within the range of my CYA/pre-trial evaluation letter to the client. Years ago (1970's) there was a well-known robbery/murder up in Ogden, Utah where the victims were forced to drink drain cleaner. This may not have been exactly the same thing, but the effects are still pretty horrific.

I remember being in law school and thinking I was going to change the world. Gonna fight for justice. Now I pass out on the couch night after night with a revolver in my mouth. Most lawyers are helping other lawyers to daydream about suck-starting a shotgun. Every time I'm in a discovery meet-and-confer I have to have my assistant take notes because my ears and ringing and my mouth watering for the taste of steel and gunpowder.

@6:48 Please consider talking to someone about this, the profession is miserable and I've been where you seem to be now but depression lies to us. It tells us the pain will go away if we just end it and we forget that there are people who care about us. I remember texting my spouse goodbye vividly and how much it made sense in the moment for it to just be over, but I'm here to tell you I was wrong.
