The Annual Bar Conference is in Sonoma, California today and tomorrow. Who’s got the good gossip? There are some pictures of several attendees from @Nevadabar.
Nearing the end of its term, today the U.S. Supreme Court issued several opinions including one striking down a New York concealed-carry law. [SCOTUSblog]
Nevada GOP chairman served subpoena over alternate electors actions. [TNI; 8NewsNow]
Rob Telles conceded the primary race for public administrator. [RJ]
Congrats to Clark County public defender Tyler Gaston on winning over $550K in WSOP. [RJ]
Is there a better side hustle for Vegas attorneys than successful poker player?
While some may say that SCOTUS decision may have gone slightly overboard in some of the commentary,, at its base it seemed pretty clear to me facially this NY law was going to have difficulty passing constitutional muster whether it be the current iteration of the Court or a more 'down the middle' version. (I'm not setting forth any kind of expertise in the area but it just 'felt' like this law was overbroad in a constituonal sense. In a personal sense i was absolutely fine with it)
Three concurring opinions might have been a little excessive. But, they set the stage to overturn Red Flag laws constitutionally as well as overturning the National Firearms Act and removing a lot of the current regulations. could be a very good thing.
Like NY, CA is a "discretionary issue" state. I am a family law attorney who has received numerous death threats from opposing parties and their significant others over many years. I have also had to get a restraining order against a stalker who for some reason felt that I was her only hope of regaining custody of her children. (I never represented the stalker — she was not a disgruntled client.)
Despite documented threats and extensive firearms training, the L.A.P.D.'s Gun Bureau decided that I had not demonstrated "good cause" for a concealed carry permit.
It might be time to re-apply in light of this decision.
4:36 — You sound like you had a compelling case to be able to have a concealed carry permit, and yet you were not granted one. What are you not telling us, pal . . ?
1221 is just nonsense. Fails to mention the lack of actual convictions and charges dismissed because cops opened the doors and waived them in. All the rest is just Twitter talking points nonsense.
Personally I am of the opinion that the broken windows, etc. were Antifa plants. I knew too many people in DC on that day.
It actually looks nice from the pictures, they keep praising the incoming president with their social media lists, so maybe she had a major hand in planning it?
11:37 AM–State Bar Annual Convention. What was the cost to attend the event (airfare, transportation, hotel, registration, and meals)? Imagine it was pretty pricey–three day conference (five days with travel). I have never attended an Annual Meeting. A lot of folks attending got some kind of comp or were sponsored I gathered from specialty bars and groups. Do the Board of Governors and past Presidents go for free or nominal cost?

Very interesting but probably prudent that the Dobbs thread was locked for the weekend. As someone who runs a Blog (not this one) there simply is no time to monitor it 24 hours a day.

So this blog got a shoutout at the convention. Justice Stiglich, when asked about lack of civility from the bench said it appears to be a problem according to us. New York City next year.

Don’t need a reason anymore.

8:08 AM–Lack of civility from the BENCH (?) as in the Judges and not the attorneys? Please clarify 8:08 AM.
Yes, uncivil judges
There are a lot of uncivil judges. Mostly family court it seems but plenty in District Court.
