Today seems like a good day to remind you that if you’re feeling down about your job, your prospects, money, or life in general, you’re not alone. We have all been there and are all trying to make our way in the world too. While it may look like others have it all figured out, they don’t. The truth is we are all making it up as we go. So, if you are struggling right now, please ask for help. If you are not struggling right now, consider reaching out to those people in your life who might be. A quick message or phone call might go a long way to helping someone through their struggles.
Confidential help from a fellow lawyer is a phone call awayToll Free: 866-828-0022Any lawyer in need of confidential assistance with alcohol, drug, gambling problems, depression and stress: help is a phone call away. The LCL hotline will put you in touch with a peer who understands the issues of lawyers today. When you call, all you have to leave is your first name and telephone number, and someone with experience and who understands will call you back. You will be listened to with understanding and support by someone who will give you resources you may not know exist out there. One new benefit of this program is three free therapist sessions for support during stressful events. More details at the link above.
Pay off your law school loans before you buy a BMW and a big house. Your career in law will be come a much less stressful one once you are out from under that debt. At least that was my experience.
Yup. Once you are relatively financially independent you free yourself up to decline cases defending scumbags, go into government legal work, go into another line or work, start designing dog purses, etc.
You're stupid if you pay off your student loans. Eventually they'll just go away.
When you die.
The student loan fairy flies by waving her magic wand making them disappear?
I for one do not want any debt that grows with interest yet is virtually non-dischargable, even if the debt has a relatively low interest rate.
Similarly, as a lender I am not particularly thrilled to loan money to people who have that kind of debt either. I know if the going gets tough, the debt to get paid will be the non-dischargable one.. not mine.
11:03-Real mature.
I love people going out buying $500-$600k in houses, and they have $200k in student loans.
So judgmental. Some men and women love to live in the moment, leveraged to the hilt, just like the great big US of A. Wave the flag and charge it on your card.
Thanks OP for this message. Good to be reminded of how true this is. Hang in there folks; I'm one of the ones faking their way through this thing as well. Happy Friday.
Remember to live your life though. Don't dedicate it solely to work unless that is what you love. Unless you're a sole practitioner, your firm will simply replace you with another fungible billing unit when you move on. They are all looking out for themselves first and foremost. If you want something to happen, take the steps to make it happen. Don't just sit there and wait for someone to hand it to you. It doesn't work that way. No one gave them permission to be successful or happy, they just did it You can too.
Being a lawyer sucks.
Which is why lots of attorneys in their 40's and 50's are always trying to get "side gigs" for some extra cash flow, while at the same time, maintaining their practice as well.

Brian Bloomfield arrested again on dui.
The Nevada Supreme Court reversed a murder case yesterday (Sitton). There's a concurring opinion by Hardesty that savages Doug Smith, who just retired.
There's a weird fact in the Order. Smith granted the motion to sever then changed his mind after the "Chief Judge" told him to. Huh?
Smith liked to make up his own rules. He did that to me a couple of times in civil cases. Glad he's gone.
