Captain Renault: "I'm shocked… SHOCKED to find that ticket fixing is going on in Southern Nevada."

Wonder how many traffic tickets Debra March and Sam Bateman have fixed or had fixed for themselves over the years. For as long as anyone can remember, ticket fixing has been part of the landscape. NOW people are all up in arms about it?

I strongly recommend everyone read the DOJ investigative report on the Ferguson police department and municipal court practices in generating revenue for the city. It briefly mentions how certain individuals had their tickets taken care by city officials. The report is an eye-opener.

Definitely. It clearly demonstrates how pretty standard procedures (issuing warrants for Failure to Appear when you don't show up for your ticket hearing or pay the fine on time) can be construed as racism, as long as that's the goal of the report writer.

Everyone should sit through a traffic court session for the regular folks. It's heart breaking. These are people who literally do not have $300 in cash to their name and have to go on month-to-month payment plans to pay a speeding ticket. The irony is that the people who pay full freight for speeding tickets in this town are those who can least afford it while middle and upper class people pay a fraction of the same amount because an attorney fixes it for them. That, my esteemed colleagues, is bullsh!t.

2:48 is right. It's pretty stark. Take the same traffic offense and if the defendant is represented, the penalty is substantially lower.

But why is this an issue? I see lawyers advertise ticket fixing for $10 and $20 all the time. Why don't these impoverished folks have a half-price lawyer fix the ticket and get the "substantially lower" rate?

@3:45pm–because you pay an attorney, and then you often pay the court MORE than the original fine to get a reduction to a parking violation. Attorneys "fix" the tickets as in get them reduced to parking violations.

At least when they pay "more" in that situation they get something for their money i.e. reduced to parking. The worst part of that John Oliver thing was the private probation companies that somehow (apparently) can charge people monthly fees while that never allow the person to catch up on what they actually owe. Thank god we don't have that here – say what you will but at least here people pay the courts direct and most JP's are good about giving whatever time is needed.

The Henderson situation is totally different. Once tickets are filed with the court, the ticket can be legally fixed, so to speak by reducing it a fine and illegal parking by the courts. This is done by an attorney or the person (with connections maybe) to the Clerk of the Court or the Court itself. The Henderson situation involves the ticket being fixed by the cop that wrote it. The police always had the discretion to withdraw a ticket before it was filed with the Court such as if the ticket was erroneously issued but the officer did not realize until after he issued or wrote the ticket. For example, in most jurisdictions tickets are dismissed for no proof of insurance or registration when you submit proof.
Take a look at NRS 484A.680 which prohibits such actions and makes it a crime. The Ferguson report said tickets were being fixed and they were blaming the police. Henderson involves the police killing tickets not the courts.
