What To Watch For In The 2021 Legislative Session

  • Law

With the 81st (2021) Legislative session under way, we thought we would ask what you think we should be watching for this year? What bills are on your radar? Are you interested in SB 3 proposing raises for the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals? Is some proposed reform going to change your way of life? Are your clients hoping for something to pass?

The Nevada Independent has an article on what to watch for here.
If you want to watch, you can on the Legislature’s Youtube channel.

No raise for appellate courts. You vote for that, you are out. These miserables should have pay cuts.

They want to raise salaries, they can cut three judges like they promised they'd do when the CoA was approved and spread the wealth around.

Defund the court of appeals, useless and worthless. No budget for it.

My daughter is a public school teacher, Elissa Cadish. and there is not enough money in the budget to fully open schools for covid 19, and you want a raise? Fuck you!

Hey, first off, leave Cadish alone. She's a solid justice. Second, I don't cry one crocodile tear for your overpaid unionized teacher. A solid 40% across the board cut would be just about right. As a concession, if she goes back to work, reduce the cut to 30%. The unions showed their true colors during Covid: screw the kids, it's all about money, benefits, and job security (read: no accountability).

I do love it, because it is the truth. I see vague and specific comments on here. Nevada Court of Appeals sucks. Jerry Tao is now a democrat again, but he wants a raise.

"overpaid unionized teacher," 5:26? My spouse is a public school teacher with a master's degree. She makes just over $30,000 a year. (She never received the raise that CCSD was provided funding for specifically a couple years back, either.) And for that privilege, she works 12-15 hours a day, every day. Our living room is being used as an online classroom rent-free. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Yes, the Elissa Cadish supporter is a moron. My sister is a teacher in another state got covid and nearly died, I guess she is unionized overpaid?
I guess she has covid fog, Nevada Supreme Court. Get a dose of reality.

I just don't see how the supreme court or the appellate court could possibly justify raises. They don't do any work. Appeals in this state are a joke. They take forever, they cost a fortune, and the court doesn't publish jack.

Regardless of whether one thinks the NCA/NSC deserves a pay raise, it's in poor taste to request a raise when so many Nevadans are still unemployed and, more importantly, Nevada has lost a ton of revenue due to covid. Now's not the time. What are they thinking?

They are thinking that we are all morons (see above post, and that they are entitled and more important than we are, the Nevada Court of Appeals and Nevada Supreme Court.

4:59 — Sorry you lost your job. I guess that's enough reason to crab about people who still have theirs. What does it say about the judicial pay structure in this State when Las Vegas Justice Court JPs get paid the same — with better benefits — as appellate court judges, and only $5K less than the Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court?

Nevada Supreme Court deserves a goose egg. Nevada Court of Appeals is not much better. They should get pay cuts, not pay raises.

So you lose a case and want to cut the judges pay? If you lose a case do you tell your client "no charge?" If we ever want to get good people on the bench we need a decent wage. I do not believe that Judicial salaries have changed in more then a decade.

Yeah, that's it. People who are critical of the Nevada Supreme Court must lose a case to be negative about them? Okay, myopic muppet.

She is retiring. She has been dealing with some sort of sickness for a while, and is finally calling it quits. She did file a Motion to Withdraw on a case with me. Not sure if that will lead anywhere, but good luck.

The Bar site shows that she is currently suspended, but states no record of discipline. I am guessing that she did not pay her bar dues and was suspended. The site lists her address as 2012 Hamilton Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89106. Try calling the number listed on the Bar site.

Someone posting earlier said something like "if the fix is in". Nevada has a history and it is not beyond consideration that there was a fix. However, what happened to all of the supporting affidavits? Where they ever made public?
