Why do public agencies like CCSD think they can just withhold information from the public? They aren’t military intelligence. They’re paid for with our tax dollars and it’s our tax dollars that have to pay the inevitable settlements/judgements against them when they get sued for all their idiotic behavior. We have a right to know what they’re up to. And CCSD has been a shit show since I was a student. Why can’t this town elect intelligent people to the school board instead of morons?
To the last question, you’re probably asking it rhetorically. But just in case… it’s the same reason certain people have been elected as judges over candidates (or even incumbents) who are generally recognized to be superior. Most people can’t be bothered to research the candidates, so they vote for the stupidest reasons. They vote on name, picture, or party allegiance, without spending even a minute looking for substance.
In my part of town, a candidate was elected as CCSD trustee over much more qualified candidates mainly because she looked pretty on her posters. She’s turned out mostly ok, but would never have gotten that far in a purely merit-based selection process.
Criticizing CCSD
“Most people can’t be bother to research the candidates”
True, because CCSD has failed to educate generations of students on democracy, government and capitalism.
Heck, I will bet that most of the teachers don’t know how government works.
Most vote for the first name on the ballot. That gives the advantage to the A or B last names (B, if there is no A on the ballot). There is a B candidate who has run unsuccessfully twice. I cringe at the thought that he/she will eventually be elected. The names on the ballot should be random. That would stop 1 part of the idiocracy.
Your Trustee was and is not OK. You just are comparing her to all of the other ridiculous trustees who are largely equally bad. Being equally bad is not the same thing as being OK.
In 2006, in Los Angeles, a well-qualified sitting judge, Dzintra Janavs, a 20-year veteran of the bench, lost by almost 8 percentage points to Lynn Diane Olson, a non-practicing attorney who ran a bagel shop. Because Ms. Olson had a name that the voters could pronounce, and Judge Janavs has an inscrutable foreign name — gender unknown in a year that females outperformed males considerably in the ballot boxes.
i also imagine it must be difficult to find intelligent people to the school board over political opportunists. This agency, moreso than perhaps any other public agency, has repeatedly shown itself as a complete mess. I would imagine most qualified and busy people that could actually guide the board would be weary of stepping into that arena?
Before charter schools took off, the CCSD board was dominated by Mormons. Things ran much better. Now most Mormons put their kids in charter or private schools and leave the CCSD dumpster fire for others to worry about.
I grew up in Vegas (before the days of charter schools) and that is objectively false. CCSD has always been trash and Mormons have nothing to do with it. Your model minority nonsense is exactly that – nonsense.
We didn’t leave CCSD, CCSD left us.
But, “objectively false” is objectively false.
As a product of CCSD in the 70s and 80s, there was a strong LDS influence in the board members. The 90s were somewhat worse, but since 2000 its all gone to shit.

Re: Katie Williams
I have lived in three other states as an adult. The recurring issue of candidates/elected officials not living/no longer living in their district is not something that comes up frequently elsewhere, but it seems to happen here quite a bit. That’s a function of our transient population, the indifference most people have to local politics and civc institutions. It appears Katie Williams may have moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, but continues to hold on to her seat with CCSD.
Which brings me to another observation about Las Vegas, demonstrable from Katie Williams. Because of the factors I just mentioned, and others, the people who run for office here tend to be, relative to other cities, less capable and more shameless. Part of the reason CCSD is a dumpster fire is that, disproportionately, incapable and shameless people run for that position. Go look at Katie Williams social media. This is a person who obviously lacks basic interpersonal skills. I don’t say that to pick on her, but to point out that this kind of profile is pretty typical of a lot of local office holders. It has nothing to do with her political beliefs. There are plenty of incapable, shameless people holding office in this town across the political spectrum.
I’m not really sure there’s a solution to this. People who are capable of being good leaders, usually are also capable of shame, which keeps them out of the spotlight, paradoxically, even though they have much less, if anything to be ashamed of compared to our actual elected officials.
If Katie Williams has moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, she will be removed. And we will elect someone just like her, at least in terms of being incapable and shameless.
Agreed. This town is odd. I know some really smart people who appear totally normal on most fronts and then say the most bizarre things when it comes to politics. And they vote that way too.

Speaking of Nevada’s unusual elected officials, we havent heard much recently from or about Michele Fiore. Anyone know how she’s doing in her role as Nye County’s Justice of the Peace?
I am genuinely surprised at how little we’ve heard about her, which I suppose is to her credit. During her tenure in Nye, she hasn’t been accused of physically assaulting other elected officials or been tied in any way to an insurrection against the government. Also, she hasn’t been investigated by the FBI, so far as I know, while she has been in Pahrump. So good on you, Michele.
Where do you expect to get watchdog reporting on what is going on in Nye County? Local news reporting has been decimated in the last three decades, purposefully.
I have intel – Michelle Fiore is BY far the most sane and most qualified candidate in her race and so should be supported by all reasonable lawyers. This is no troll it is 100% true.

With the Falconi ruling regarding sealed cases, it was a matter of time before legislative changes were sought. And, here it comes!

Call Jeremy. I am guessing with the loss of games the projection of revenue for the A’s stadium has stayed the same or possibly increased. Vegas is different.
Only in Las Vegas
As I recall the original projections from the A’s, which were accepted by the county, stated that every seat in the new stadium would be filled for every game.

What’s up with wackadoodle attorneys rage drafting briefs? What are you guys on?
NEW YORK (AP) — A U.S. federal court of appeals panel suspended a venture capital firm’s grant program for Black women business owners, ruling that a conservative group is likely to prevail in its lawsuit claiming that the program is discriminatory.
The ruling against the Atlanta-based Fearless Fund is another victory for conservative groups waging a sprawling legal battle against corporate diversity programs that have targeted dozens of companies and government institutions.
The case against the Fearless Fund was brought last year by the American American Alliance for Equal Rights, a group led by Edward Blum, the conservative activist behind the Supreme Court case that ended affirmative action in college admissions.
Blum applauded the ruling, saying “programs that exclude certain individuals because of their race such as the ones the Fearless Fund has designed and implemented are unjust and polarizing.”
Great. Then maybe White people should be owned as chattel for a couple of centuries and then denied the right to vote or drink from the same water fountain, or attend the same schools as everyone else for another century thereafter. Do that, and I will call it even.
They were (and worse) by the Bedouins. The Barbary slave trade was so prolific that the European coasts along the Mediterranean were virtually uninhabited for centuries after the fall of Rome.
derp derp I don’t even know why I’m engaging, but Mediterranean/European slavery was nothing like American slavery. You’re comparing apples and oranges. Not to mention the temporal distance. Go back to your mom’s basement and let the adults talk.

The purpose of every large institution is to protect the institution.
Omg u just summed up my MA in Public Administration

Good timing, as I am researching the races on my primary ballot this morning.
Many of the candidates do not even have websites.

I love getting these. Lets me know that I am taking up residency in their heads – – rent free!
That’s not what it means. It means that’s how they are. Has nothing to do with you.
This profession attracts all sorts of toxic narcissists and emotional cripples.
2:56 is said toxic narcissist to which 2:59 refers. 2:56 must be family court practitioner.
Oh so that’s why my ex wants to go to law school.
Can you share one? Inquiring minds want to know!
