Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

The July 2016 Bar Exam starts tomorrow, so we thought we’d give you an opportunity to pass on your last minute advice and tips, as well as dredge up some of your horror stories. It looks like the exam this year is at the UNLV Student Union building–but it wasn’t always so academic… What casino did you take your exam at? Did the power go out? Was there an earthquake? Did someone wear adult diapers? Did someone run out of the room screaming? Has anyone taken another bar exam years after the first time? Was it easier or harder? Should Nevada adopt the UBE?

After taking the Bar exam in a casino I couldn't imagine taking one anywhere else. Your room a is a short elevator ride away so no driving/traffic stress in the morning. Plus 24 hour coffee, food, etc all the conveniences of a hotel. An added bonus-as soon as you are done you can immediately grab a nice meal and a cold one. I took my bar exam at Texas Station.

Texas Station Feb 2008 here as well. No drive, breakfast at the cafe in the morning before the exam, bowling or a movie afterwards to relax before going through your crib sheets again for the next day. Gotta be better than @ UNLV.

Nevada should not adopt the UBE. We should copy California's model and Florida's model. Everybody takes the bar exam. Everybody. Law professors too. No exceptions. Most folks don't know that there are eleven exceptions to the bar exam. The "C" numbers originally designed for in house counsel has now spread to government entities. It was designed as a limited license but is now so big you can drive a truck through it. The UBE is designed to foster "reciprocity." I am sorry but I don't want to go to Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois or Michigan. We don't need their lawyers here waiving into our state. https://www.nvbar.org/for-lawyers/admissions-4003/specialty-admissions/ The list is not inclusive. See Supreme Court Rule 49.1 to 49.11.

Agreed! A difficult bar exam keeps at least some of the riff raff and grifters out. The last thing Nevada needs is a flood of failed lawyers from other states looking to start over here.

Texas Station, 2010. No drama. No weirdness. Also no essay on Commercial Paper, thank God.

Cafeteria at McQueen High in Reno. Also given in the basement of the Hacienda at that time. For you newcomers, that's where Mandalay Bay stands now.

Texas Station Bar Examination 4 Life! I went and pulled slots during the breaks. What's more Vegas than that?

Hell to the No on the UBE. The only reason we have jobs in the first place, and good-paying jobs at that, is because we have no reciprocity and a tough bar exam. I went to law school in a midwestern state with reciprocity and generally high bar passage numbers. There were law firms and DA jobs that started in the $20's, no joke.

I am all for UBE, but I totally get why it wouldn't work in NV. I took my bar in '14, so it was at the UNLV Student Union. Interesting tid bit was someone mid way through the first day just closed their laptop and straight up left. I guess they realized they shouldve studied lol

1996 at The Hacienda – the place was in tatters and was imploded on New Year's Eve later the same year – tradesmen were using some kind of jackhammer on the floor directly above the exam room – the State Bar had a really cute admissions director back in those days

Cashman Center. They locked the doors and would not let anyone into the facility. Which caused problems when everyone hopped up on Mountain Dew were literally left baking in the sunshine with nowhere to go.

2006 at the Tuscany. Funny story – a guy I knew from law school was taking the bar at the same time, and after the first day, he left to go fight in the UFC. I never saw him in the UFC, but he had a job at Lionel Sawyer (if he passed the bar), so maybe he ended up in a better spot never working there …

Early 2000s, and the bar examiners were dumb enough to allow Marissa Border to pass the bar exam.

As if the Bar Examiners would know that someone would have automobile accident 10 years later. You are really brazen and brave to sit behind a keyboard anonymously posting. World needs another Internet tough guy.

@1:53,

I took the bar in 2006 at Tuscany too. I remember meeting that UFC guy on the first day while talking to a friend who went to that law school. Did you happen to win $50 gambling during one of the breaks?

1997, Caesar's Palace. It was walking through a few mazes to get to the area where they held it. It was in an area of the casino that they subsequently knocked down and then rebuilt.

Tuscany was great for blackjack and a few beers during the break.

I do not remember taking the bar exam. I woke up two days later with a nasty headache and a new "friend" snoring next to me. Yes, I passed the first time.

In the news from the North. The Washoe County Bar Association released its Bi-Annual Judicial Survey a few weeks ago: http://wcbar.org/wp-content/uploads/2016-JS-Summary.pdf
