Smog Spotters

  • And here are your candidates for the two open spots on the Eighth Judicial District Court bench. Quite possibly the strongest, most qualified class of candidates we’ve had in quite some time. What do you think–is it time for a Judge Bulla?
  • A former Nevada corrections officer was sentenced to five years probation for his key role in smuggling cell phones, cds, chicken, and alcohol into High Desert State Prison. Meanwhile one of the prisoners involved got an additional 2-5 years prison time. A tipster tells us that Judge Kathleen Delaney, who sentenced the former officer, says that the PSI determines the sentence. The tipster goes on to ask, “Why do we pay her to ‘judge’?” What do you think? [RJ]

In other news, sources say Laxalt is establishing a tip line for illegal immigration. His crack team of state investigators will rush to the area to check papers of any suspects.

Come on folks, we all know how things work in this town. The fix is in, and William Horne is already picking out new furniture for his chambers.

"Bulla would be good." You must be delusional. She has Black Robe Syndrome so bad already, and she is not even a judge. She is a petty, snarky person who should not be in a judicial position. However, the good thing about her being a judge is I can preempt her finally!

She is not all bad. I think she cares. On a spooky note, during heated back-to-back discovery motion practice I had a 50 shades of grey dream of her and me. Now I have trouble looking her in the eyes.

Cannot agree with you more. Bulla is a mess but if she becomes a judge at least I won't have to deal with her on a semi-regular basis anymore.

Agree with 9:02. Bulla is horrible with ego problems and likely daddy issues. She should apply to be a White Castle burger flipper. They wouldn't like her there either. I like Hardy, Watkins or Marcek. All of them will be fine choices. At least there are no Family Court hacks like former judges Gayle Nathan or Bill Gonzalez in the mix looking for another government paycheck.

Her campaign emails were super-entertaining! And it would be sooooo cool to be there when she shakes hands with Smith at the new judge reception.

Uh huh. You like her campaign emails? Congratulations.

Try working with her — she is vindictive, highly political and incurious about anything other than her own advancement. Just my opinion.

Well, 3:33 PM, I dare say that these fine virtues qualify her to don the Robe of Power. She will fit right in.

Here's what I think: Given that we have some good candidates that ran and didn't win, anyone who didn't run in last fall's election is eliminated. Then, let's choose from the top vote getters since these candidates can demonstrate that they had some 124,000 people who wanted them elected as judge. That narrows it down to Joe Hardy, John Glenn Watkins, and Christine Guerci-Nyhus. If you feel you must replace a woman with a woman, then the two that should be judges are Hardy and Guerci-Nyhus.

I agree with your choices, and some of your logic; however, just because someone ran election does not mean that they should be appointed. (e.g. Liker or Friedberg).

Is no one going to comment on the fact that the prison guard smuggled in "chicken?" That is awesome. I wonder how that felt being jammed in someone's cooter. Why the hell would you need a chicken in prison anyway?

How wrong is it if Delaney did say she the PSI determines sentence? Isn't that still something within her judgment?

The PSI is based on a scoring system that has never been validated and at least one expert has said is racially biased. Delaney can consider it but no sentence should be based on it.

It didn't say "a" chicken. I presume the meaning is chicken for cooking/eating. But it's still darn funny. (And I could be wrong – maybe he did smuggle in "a" chicken.)

Can definitely tell who doesn't know how to comply with the rules of discovery here. Bulla is firm but fair. She can moody on the bench, but then again, so can most judges. She is smart and not afraid to make a bold call when it is justified. We need more of her type on the bench.

That is not an accurate assessment (i.e. because we don't like Bulla we must not follow the rules). I pride myself on following the rules, but I still find Bulla to be disrespectful to practitioners. Moreover, Bulla is not fair, because she makes "spirit of the rule" decisions in one hearing and expects the entire bar to be aware of her ruling. She has been the commissioner for nearly 7 years now and has utterly failed to publish anything that alerts the bar to her various rulings/decisions/predilections. I don't doubt that her job is tough, because she hears nothing but fighting all day, but it won't get any easier if she becomes a judge. However, she wanted and kept the job, so buck up. Also, if she would draft any opinions like the prior commissioner did (or write an article like Commissioner Ayers up north), the bar would know her interpretations of the rules.

THIS! Publishing opinions would go a long way to alleviate discovery disputes because everyone would know how she is going to handle certain common issues.

In her submission, Bulla states, "I am committed to fostering civility in court proceedings." Anyone that has sat through hours of hearings waiting to be called by Bulla knows her commitment does not run very deep.

Also, I now know why she doesn't have time to write any opinions.

This is gold!

How about the review:
I loved this book!

I chose to read the book because of the author, but found it compelling from the start. In subtle ways, the stories of the characters are woven beautifully into themes of spirituality, hopelessness, hopes and dreams. As the story evolves, you start fast forwarding to the possibilities it presents. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

NO ON JOE HARDY!
Any candidate who would make the following post on a FB page of a total clown (Stephen Stubbs) has no business being a Judge. Stubbs sent out invites to his criminal obstruction trial and Joe Hardy quickly responded.

What is a "law firm hostess"? Is this just an excuse to hire some pretty girls without nasty employment law violations?

Is that an official holiday? Where we all parade down the street wearing paper bags over our heads next to gigantic floats depicting the election of Elizabeth Halverson, the med-mal lawyers rioting at the federal courthouse, and Judge Jones selling fake WWI bonds? Maybe some sort of grand finale float featuring representatives from local law firms throwing fake money into the gaping maw of a hungry judicial candidate?

I'm in.

Provide photo with application, weight checked before proceeding to the stripper pole talent test (in lieu of words per minute verification) in the waiting room then off to Naqvi's casting couch for interview. Shame on you, Farhan, did you just turn the Big 5-Oh or otherwise hitting your midlife crisis? Kutner hired a slew of vacuous bimbos and look how they turned on him…. maybe learn a lesson from him there and save yourself the grief?
