One of our commenters has a question the status of on-campus interviewing at UNLV. Is this still a thing? Does your firm participate in OCI? Which firms do? What do our Boyd readers think of the process? Did any Boyd grads have any success with OCI?
By the way, congratulations to the UNLV football team for coming from 21 points behind to beat a team they were favored to beat in the first place. Is this the beginning of a winning streak?
Why do so many local firms hire from UNLV when there is such an oversupply of law grads, and thus an endless supply of grads from far superior institutions? I don't get it.
@ 11:11. First, let me say, "ouch." I am laughing, but … dang. (I am not a Boyd grad by the way.)
Second, I think your response presupposes that law firms want grads from superior institutions. I did insurance defense for a few years when I first started practicing, and it was pretty clear that some of those firms in town only wanted cheap labor so they could maximize the return on their low billable hourly rates. Or, (think ATMS here) the firms might not care if you stay around, because then they always have cheap labor in the form of new attorneys and rarely have to give raises or promote to partner. Thus, it doesn't matter if the attorney went to UNLV, Thomas Cooley, or Guadala-who-the-hell-cares University School of Law and Pottery.
Just my two cents worth.
I have yet to be at a firm in Vegas that does OCI at Boyd. I'm thinking based on the lack of responses here, I'm not alone in my experience.
Some of the biggest and/or best in town do OCI at Boyd-to name just some of them: Lewis & Roca (or whatever they are now), Snell Wilmer; McDonald Carano, MAC, Fennemore Craig and LSC (at least they all have in the past).
The top of the class Boyd grads we have hired have all been good. I'm sure the work product gets worse as you go deeper in to the Boyd class.
What big-name firms don't do OCI at Boyd? Ballard Spahr? That's the only one I can think of, and they're pretty small, so I'm not sure they do OCI at all.
