Judges Tao, Johnson, and Silver have filed for the appellate court, along with attorneys Thomas D. Beatty III and Aurora Maria Maskall. See http://www.nevadajudiciary.us/index.php/applicants-page

Tao and Johnson seem like good choices. I always thought that Johnson wanted to step up to the next level. I'm surprised that Ellsworth hasn't submitted her name; she would be an excellent choice as well.

I am surprised Ellsworth was re-elected. Her approval ratings are atrocious.

So were these three the ones Justice Douglas mentioned. They each filed for a different "department." I'll be glad to see some of these district judges move up, it will be a good chance to appoint people like Joe Hardy, John Glen Watkins, and/or Phil Dabney.

Curious how each of the sitting judges picked a different department on their application.

Why appoint someone who could not even bother to run in the 2014 election?

Collusion? Most definitely. But that's just politics. The selections and/or replacements were chosen once the election results came in.

I am surprised Cadish didn't. Would the practice length of time apply to court of appeals?

Yes. Gotta have 15 years. Cadish's 23 years certainly qualifies. Side benefit – no Dean Heller to vet her qualifications.

I agree that Cadish is more than qualified and an impressive judge. She makes sound decisions and carries herself very professionally in the courtroom. I think she would make a fine justice.

Wow, that's some high calibre talent, makes me much more confident in how the new appellate court will succeed. Crazy how Judge Johnson just campaigned to raise over a quarter million dollars in construction defect attorneys and their clients related donations, and now may leave an opening if she is "promoted", but there are plenty of appeals in CD law too.

Our new Secretary of State did not vote to place the Appeals Court issue before the Nevada voters?

The following members of the Nevada State Assembly voted against placing this measure on the ballot in 2011. [8]

Note: A no vote on SJR 14 meant that a legislator did not want to refer the question to voters and did not necessarily mean these legislators disapproved of the stipulations laid out in Question 1.

Assembly John Ellison (R-33) John Hambrick (R-2) Ira Hansen (R-32) Randy Kirner (R-26) Kelly Kite (R-39) Pete Livermore (R-40) Mark Sherwood (R-21) Senate Barbara Cegavske (R-Clark County, No. 8) Don Gustavson (R-Washoe County, No. 2) Elizabeth Halseth (R-Clark County, No. 9) Ben Kieckhefer (R-Washoe County, No. 4) James Settelmeyer (R-Capital Senatorial District) SJR 14 2013 "No" votes

What's Elizabeth Halseth doing nowadays? She had an interesting story about a nice mom turned Maxim model. LOL

Agreed. Jim is a great attorney. Too bad he picked . . . rather, the wrong side picked him.

This morning, there are a few police officers standing on the judge's parking lot side of the street between the lot and the south entrance. Anytime someone comes out near the street they step into the street – I'm assuming "just in case" a car comes barreling down that street that Judge Bell was hit on.

Why appoint someone who the electorate doesn't want, like Bush or Scalia? Glad those people are still practicing, instead of on the bench.

Curse you! Given the trend of the comments, I thought I was going to read about Oscar Goodman's quest to put on the martini-colored robes of a Justice of the Court of Appeals. I would approve the hell out of that. Alas, it was merely a human interest piece on Oscar Goodman's life.
