Judge Markell To Resign?

  • Law

Word on the street is that the Honorable Bruce A. Markell from our Bankruptcy Court tendered his resignation today, effective July 10, so he can go teach at Florida State University College of Law.

Can anyone confirm or deny this rumor?

True. Effective July 10. He's leaving to teach at Florida St. law school.

I don't know the lawyer in question, but I did notice that he had a high bard number. (Even higher than mine.) Even so, it was kind of a dick move by Leiter. Leiter himself calls it a mild example of juvenile behavior. It wasn't public until Leiter took it upon himself to publicly shame someone who Dared to Question His Betters. And spamming the named partner's emails? Seriously?

he's a law prof with a blog, and he used it first to criticize a professor that pointed out that law school is overpriced and a bad choice for many, and then to publicly share an email from a Vegas attorney that criticized leiter for his comments (and threatened to email the guys bosses).

I will repeat the second part of 11:18's comment. Why should I care?

Did anyone else see the Labor protesters outside Eglet's offices downtown this morning? Anyone know the deal?

The labor protesters have been out there for a month or two. I think they are really making an impact. I, for one, will never do construction work for Eglet.

Sorry to see Markell go, but I think many suspected it was coming. A guy like that is hard to keep around (he was there 9 years or so), especially when he could be making 2-4 times as much in private practice or have a quality of life gig like he is going to, or going back into academia, being able to teach students, being able to think about issues (and write on them), and not have to deal with the many knuckleheads who claim to be practicing bankruptcy law. Markell is a sharp guy and really raised the level of practice for the bankruptcy bar here. He will be missed.

Who could blame the Judge as the BK court system is so messed up. The bed ones going to jail and the good ones skipping town. Its embarrassing around here!

Two Judges down, two more waiting to go. Wait for the nuttiest Trustees to make their bids to wear the black robes! The court will slow to a crawl with only new Judges this fall!
