WTH are you taking from his LinkedIn? He was not a Boy Scout Troop leader preying on kids; he was in the Boy Scouts as a Boy Scout as a child. Are you arguing every kid who makes the rank of Eagle Scout is a pedophile? The guy volunteered through the law school for Kid's Court for one summer. Now every attorney who is a truancy judge, who takes on CAP cases, who coaches Mock Trial or who volunteers for Project Real is a pedophile? Jesus you people overreact.

@2:59 That's not what commenters mean at all. When you have a man arrested for soliciting children online and then you find out he has a past of associating himself with children and participating in activities where he is in contact with children, it's not an accident. Not ever person who reached the rank of Eagle Scout was arrested for soliciting children. Not every CAP attorney, truancy judge, or mock trial volunteer was arrested for soliciting children. You're ignoring the crucial part of the analysis…the facts of his arrest. Sometimes 1+1 does equal 2.

11:32 and 12:51-I get the part about not jumping to too many conclusions, and not flushing a young person's reputation and career until much more is known.

But keep in mind we already know that this goes well beyond a case where a law enforcement officer, online, poses as an underage girl, and the suspect takes the bait.

Even those situations constitute a serious crime, but this goes well-beyond that, as it involves an actual underage person, and he is accused of performing sex acts with that youngster.

It is also concerning, as posters have pointed out, about the LinkedIn and other material listing scouting and educational activities which involve access to children.

Things are hard enough for thousands of sincere, very decent adults who give selflessly of their time and efforts to help children and teenagers in a whole gamut of areas. These days, unlike a few decades ago, many parents have a real built-in suspicion about adults who devote so much time and effort to working with children, often for little or no pay. And whenever something like this occurs, suspicions grow even more intense, and(quite understandably) the parents who did have their children enrolled in these programs, start withdrawing their children at an alarming rate.

3:55 here. I meant to reference 11:32 and 2:25(rather than 12:51).

I get that a lot more details will emerge, but there is already more than enough here to be extremely concerned about, and for parents to always strive for heightened diligence.

@3:55: he’s facing luring/attempted luring and attempted statutory sexual seduction. Word is this was an ICAC operation, so no actual underage victim or accusation of sex acts with a minor.

3:55— You state "It is also concerning, as posters have pointed out, about the LinkedIn and other material listing scouting and educational activities which involve access to children." His LinkedIn shows him doing Scouting AS A CHILD, not in a capacity of an adult having access to children. There is nothing creepy about being a Boy Scout growing up. Nothing on LinkedIn states that he was ever an adult leader for BSA or preyed on children. He taught TaeKwonDo from age 18-21. Creepy? Not necessarily unless there is evidence that he acted inappropriately. Volunteered for UNLV Kids Court which is a supervised activity through the law school. Nothing creepy about it.

What is creepy about Castro is specifically what is alleged in the news reports which is that he got on Kik and tried to lure someone who he believed was underaged and got caught in an ICAC sting. Assuming its true, he is screwed. I have no problem letting the facts of the case speak for themselves. But to say that being a Boy Scout and reaching Eagle by age 16 (and last being in the BSA in 2014) is clear evidence that he was trying to be a predator is ludicrous. To say that people who volunteer for childrens' charities do so because they are sexual predators is likewise nonsense.

Thanks 7:01 – agree – his current charges will play out according to the evidence but his being a boy scout as a child does not evidence predatory behavior by him and it is unfair to suggest that it does.

The focus of those discussing 3:55's comment seems to center around 3:55 appearing to mistakenly believe that the scouting was during the suspect's adult years(like as a scout leader) rather than him being a scout as a child.

I'm not too concerned about that meaningless error, but am concerned about the broader point 3:55 was attempting to make.

3:55 argued that whenever something like this attains new coverage, it heightens the suspicion level of parents, and thus many people involved with children's activities are painted with the same brush, despite the fact that thousands of adults selflessly and sincerely give of their time to work with children.

Is that an accurate point(that parents then become much more suspicious, and much more guarded) about any adult who works heavily with children, or do most parents just view this as a bad apple situation?

I know it's difficult to generalize what most parents would think, but anyone have any ideas?

8:32-It is real difficult to generalize. Depends on the parent.

I realize that's not a helpful observation, but I would note that not only do some parents become more guarded and suspicious, but those who are actually working with children often become a lot more careful, to protect themselves from false accusations. They often, as well they should, avoid being privately one-on-one with the child

It appears that 9:33 is attempting to equate what Tanner did to being gay… should go without saying but no, the LGBTQ community (including the LGBTQ section of the bar) does not condone anything about what Mr. Castro did and certainly does not claim him as part of the community. So 3:55's comment shows what is wrong with this Blog. 3:55 stated "But keep in mind we already know that this goes well beyond a case where a law enforcement officer, online, poses as an underage girl, and the suspect takes the bait. Even those situations constitute a serious crime, but this goes well-beyond that, as it involves an actual underage person, and he is accused of performing sex acts with that youngster."

No he was not, and no he did not. He is accused of talking online with an undercover ICAC officer and showing up to a park crawling with cops.

3:55– you are the very problem that you caution against when you say "Things are hard enough for thousands of sincere, very decent adults who give selflessly of their time and efforts to help children and teenagers in a whole gamut of areas. . . . And whenever something like this occurs, suspicions grow even more intense, and (quite understandably) the parents who did have their children enrolled in these programs, start withdrawing their children at an alarming rate."

You bemoan parents having suspicions of their children being in programs and pulling their children from programs in which they were exposed to sexual predators without actually stopping to see that there is no evidence that this case involves a sexual predator preying upon children in programs in which he was volunteering. None. The dude volunteered to teach kids about the court system; there is no evidence that he did anything untoward while volunteering. The dude was a Boy Scout as a child yet you falsely allege that he is a Boy Scout adult leader. The person painting with too broad of a brush involving paint that was falsely concocted is you.

I might have missed why 3:55 comments were so outrageous, but it seems I'm outvoted. Either I, or someone else, is not reading clearly enough.

The mistake about whether the suspect was involved in scouting as a child, or as an adult scout leader seems not to be important.

3:55 and others seemed to be attempting a very broad point, and not necessarily analogizing it to the facts of this case. Publicity of this sort(or a gazzillion other examples) simply make parents more vigilant. And there are many programs that become tainted when an adult involved in that program is so arrested, even though many adults give selflessly of their time to programs affecting children.

But if you like, 12:23, I will instruct 3:55 and others of the following rules.

Even though the dynamic 3:55 is absolutely valid, and noticeable by anyone who is not living under a rock, do not make the point unless a case occurs which analogizes exactly. Wait for some youth league athletic coach to take advantage of a child, and then see the invariable high number or parents withdrawing their children from such program, before you are permitted to observe that these bad apple adults take the focus off all the adult volunteers who give selflessly, and that such programs often become tainted based on those bad acts of a few sick individuals.

12:23's focus(as well as 12:23's earlier posts which were obviously by the same person) by fixating so much on some error as to when the suspect was involved in scouting, makes one thing clear to me.

I would love to have 12:23 on the opposing end of an appellate case as they would obsess on some harmless factual error, and entirely miss the whole point of the case

All of you stop fighting or I will take you to the principal's office. Let's just agree that most adults who work on behalf of children have their hearts in the right place.

And when a violation occurs in the context of certain youth programs(which does not seem to be the case here as this was not in the context of some youth league program or sports) that it does cause unwelcome publicity and concerns about a program which is otherwise populated with well-meaning adults.

But in standard cases of an adult using the computer to secure an underaged victim, that does not really have a direct impact on how people perceive these type of youth programs

These youth programs are really critical for the development of children and teenagers. I am very concerned that this issue is creating permanent irreversible damage. BSA, sports teams, church youth groups had a massively positive impact on my life and many others. I volunteer with my kids groups. BSA has implemented stringent policy changes. We need to keep these programs, we need more volunteers and we need more youth involved. This is especially true in Clark County where so many kids are being actively harmed by CCSD and neglected by their parents.

3:28. I am not 12:23 but I would say that you missed his/her point completely. First 3:55 made a categorically false statement that everyone already knows that this was a sting operation and that Castro raped "an actual underage person, and he is accused of performing sex acts with that youngster." That statement is flatly false. It is not true that "everyone knows" that assertion to be true because it is 100% false.

Secondarily 3:55 and others have held this case up as evidence that volunteers for youth programs prey on children. There is no evidence that Castro ever preyed on children in any of his volunteer activities. The charges do not arise out of any of his volunteer activities. And in fact there is no evidence that Castro directed his volunteer activities or interests towards children.

This is not harmless error. These statements are the entire thesis of 3:55's argument and they are simply false. These are the entire point of the case and they do not support his/her/your argument or conclusions. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Yep, if you recover less than $20k (or if the other side acted in bad faith):

NRS 18.010  Award of attorney’s fees.

2.  In addition to the cases where an allowance is authorized by specific statute, the court may make an allowance of attorney’s fees to a prevailing party:

(a) When the prevailing party has not recovered more than $20,000; or

(b) Without regard to the recovery sought, when the court finds that the claim, counterclaim, cross-claim or third-party complaint or defense of the opposing party was brought or maintained without reasonable ground or to harass the prevailing party. The court shall liberally construe the provisions of this paragraph in favor of awarding attorney’s fees in all appropriate situations. It is the intent of the Legislature that the court award attorney’s fees pursuant to this paragraph and impose sanctions pursuant to Rule 11 of the Nevada Rules of Civil Procedure in all appropriate situations to punish for and deter frivolous or vexatious claims and defenses because such claims and defenses overburden limited judicial resources, hinder the timely resolution of meritorious claims and increase the costs of engaging in business and providing professional services to the public.

If an attorney practices appellate work, these are not "interruptions" but "interjections." They are the rule, not the exception. It is a controlled dialogue, not necessarily a situation where someone can expect to speak for minutes unimpeded. And in fact, often the questions or interjections are to the benefit of the presenter, and gives them a really good opportunity to more strongly make a point.

That said, whether "interruptions" or interjections", no excuse for it to occur more toward women than men, if that is in fact the case.
