Exhausting Appeals

  • Law

Last week a panel of the Nevada State Bar disciplinary panel recommended that attorney and political powerbroker Harvey Whittemore  keep his law license until the appeals of his three felony convictions for violating campaign finance laws. The panel’s recommendation will go to the Supreme Court of Nevada who will decide whether to accept that recommendation, continue to suspend his license, or disbar him.

What do you think? Did the panel get it right? Should an attorney convicted of three felonies be permitted to continue practicing until all appeals are exhausted?

Bye, bye. You lose the presumption of innocence after conviction. And by a higher standard than the bar uses in disciplinary hearings.

I know nobody wants to talk about the game yesterday, but did anybody catch that horrible Lloyd Baker commercial? I felt embarrassed watching the game with my non-lawyer friends and coming to grips with the fact that I am a member of the same bar as that guy.

Pssh. At least he wasn't swinging a hammer with a burning cross on it, unlike this dude in Georgia who bought up the full two minutes of local advertising. http://deadspin.com/georgia-lawyers-local-super-bowl-ad-is-batshit-amazing-1514869904?rev=1391440478&utm_campaign=socialflow_deadspin_twitter&utm_source=deadspin_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow

To be honest, I thought the Lloyd Baker commercial was a joke until the end.

He'll probably get 300 calls this week. Not sure how I feel about that, exactly, just thinking out loud.

I don't know if those are the type of clients I'd want. But then again, any client who brings in money is a good client, right?

Along similar lines, did anyone else see the Watson Rounds ad in the Feb 3-9 edition of LV Business Press? Am I missing something? Are they trying to be funny? I just don't get it.

I'd like to see what you're talking about. Can you post a .pdf of it? Or a link online?

Exactly. I wanted to believe that I was missing something, but all along I had the sneaking suspicion that this was just stupid advertising. Watson Rounds, I now look down on you.

Three-months, so is he actually going to take the bench in May and work through the end of his term??

Just wait. He may be back as a Senior Judge sooner than you would imagine.

After he exhausts his three months of unpaid suspension on these charges, he will likely go back on paid leave pending the outcome of the criminal trial or the end of the term whichever comes first. Nice, right?

What an absolute joke….I would have thought judicial disciplinary would be more stringent than bar counsel. What a humiliation to our profession.

I'm not sure what good his license will do Whittemore. His stock in trade was his influence/campaign contribution ability, and he is pretty radioactive on that front now.
