Anyone want to discuss West Virginia's Court of Appeals? Crazy stuff going on.

Is that where they are impeaching judges? Good, we should do that with some of the ones here.

So if the allegations are true, it seems like a pretty good rationale for impeachment. I find it interesting, however, that the result will be five new GOP-appointed justices, where there are currently 2 from each party.
I saw that too. It sounds like most of the impeachments are justified, but it also sounds like the WV legislature dragged their feet in doing so in order to avoid a deadline that would have triggered special elections. Instead the GOP gets to hand pick every single replacement. Who needs gerrymandering?

The new efiling in the EJDC needs to be scrapped. A motion filed on 8/10 isn't file stamped until 8/14, and the file stamp date is 8/10. Nobody knows if procedurally that motion will be rejected by the clerk. No reason staff has to download the file 11 times ober 3 business days to determine if the clerk approved or rejected the filing. No follow up notice that the filing was accepted. There is jo reason why it requires 4 emails notices upon filing when none have beem accepted by the clerk. Wastw of resources and tims.
How about it fails to properly give notice at the time of service. The copy received at the time of service has no notice of any motion date, etc. My understanding of the new policy is that by immediately serving, it goes hand in hand with their ability to collect the filing fee up front, not on acceptance of the filing. It was implemented at the same time.

And, just like that… the ability to get online Las Vegas news coverage without paying an excessive subscription is gone.
I get the whole "you need to pay people for their work" thing, and in general support paying for services you receive. I even pay for access to a couple other newspapers. But if the RJ thinks I'm paying to help support their "work" they are sorely mistaken. It's sad that a city the size of Las Vegas doesn't really have a true newspaper.
It is, indeed, very sad that Vegas doesn't have a real newspaper. The RJ has good content, but the entire enterprise is tainted by Sheldon's frequent use of the paper to advance his views, interests and to act as an ax against his foes (see coverage against LVCVA, for example). The Sun is run by someone who inherited the operation, but doesn't have the wisdom that comes from building a business from the ground up. It's mostly just NYT wire articles, a couple of local articles and the reliably liberal views of Brian Greenspun. It's not really a newspaper as much as it is an insert or newsletter within the RJ. The Sun's local coverage is so sparse that it is nearly non-existent and totally irrelevant. Then there's the Nevada Independent, which has the potential to deliver where the RJ and the Sun can't/won't/don't. Though Ralston certainly leans left, I don't sense that he is out there pushing a political agenda. That said, he is very insecure and when he takes things personally, he has no problem reciprocating. Plus, a lot of his stuff is inside-baseball. I'm not sure how widely read the N.I. is or what kind of influence it actually has.
I also understand the economics argument, however, the cost per reader of a physical copy is far different than the cost per reader of an electronic copy. It is interesting that the cost of producing the product is never easily ascertained. What percentage of the paper content is original material produced by local employees vs. what is simply recycled material produced by national sources (e.g. AP News). How much revenue is produced by the subscribers to the physical paper, the advertisers, payment by The Sun paper for delivering it with the RJ, newsstand sales, etc.
It makes sense that the physical paper readers result in higher costs to the paper as it requires newsprint, ink, printing expenses, transportation, accounting work, etc. The electronic version requires almost none of those things (possibly some accounting work) though does have a higher IT and internet bandwidth cost.
One would think that the physical paper revenue supplemented by the revenue from newsstand sales and The Sun revenue would pay for the costs of the physical and electronic additions. The advertising revenue would therefore be pure profit. Of course, the RJ misses some of the boat by their website presentation method. Rather than presenting the electronic edition in some form of a pdf version (lock it down with privileges that presents printing or screen captures) of the print edition and thereby increase the number of eyes seeing the ads (and justifying a higher advertising rate), they simply link to the story and reduce the effectiveness of the ads in the physical paper.
This new model is likely to adversely impact the paper's bottom line. I expect that the number of clicks to the website will reduce dramatically, thereby reducing the banner ad income that the website produces. Online income is based upon the number of views (clicks). If you reduce the number of people viewing something by forcing them to pay for the privilege, the collateral income received by having those viewers will also reduce.
For what is being proposed as the subscription price, I would have to seriously consider resuming my long expired subscription to the Wall Street Journal. While it is seriously lacking in local news (unless it is a major national story), it does an outstanding job in giving in depth analysis of the stories it does follow.
I will gladly scrounge five free articles from each of my iPhone, my work desktop and laptop, my home PC and iPad and be completely RJ'd out before ever giving Sheldon a monthly fee. Plus, I'm not even sure I've read 20 RJ articles in a month before.

Easy work around – copy the link of an article, open a private incognito window, paste and go to article. No tracking of how many articles you have seen so no limit. You are welcome.

This utter and complete failure brought to you by…keyboards…Jeff Wells and Steve, I need to be fired, Grierson.

Welp, I guess the blog will die.

Vegas deserves so much better.

The RJ is a rag and I barely ready it for free. Lol at paying money for the privilege.
There will be 5 free articles per month or something, like a lot of sites have. Learn how to clear your cookies. It's not hard.
