Each year at this time we like to take a look at salaries and bonuses. In years past, we did a compensation survey to give you an idea of how much money attorneys in Las Vegas make. You can see the results for 2017 and 2016 by clicking on the links. In 2019, Arizona Attorney magazine included a similar survey of Arizona attorneys on a larger scale. What do you think about the current state of pay for attorneys here? Are you underpaid or overpaid? Did you get a bonus? Has your billable hour requirement gone up or down this year? Any predictions on where compensation is headed? Did covid dramatically alter your firm’s pay structure?
For those of you willing to share some details about your pay, we suggest leaving a comment that puts some your information in the following format: [Years in practice]-[Type of practice: CR for criminal, CI for civil, F for family, G for government, P for private practice]-[2021 gross salary to the nearest $10K+bonus if any]. Example for someone who has practiced for 17 years and does private practice criminal defense for a gross salary of $387,000 with no bonus other than being their own boss:
17-CR/P-390,000+no bonus
We know it’s not exact, but maybe it will help someone else in the legal community figure out what they should be making.
My bonus is owning my own firm, and being able to be with my baby while I work.
7-CI(Insurance Defense)-$110,000 + $2,000 bonus (2,000 hr billable requirement)
2-CI/P(Business Litigation/Transactional)-140,000+3,000 Special+15,000(Expected based on origination/fiscal receipts)
4-CI/P(Business Lit)-160,000+6,000 (1,900 billable requirement)
13-CI/P-170,000+4,000

When her name was first mentioned on this blog, I chimed in to say an academic would make a terrible judge. Naysayers countered that she has real experience. My assessment was correct. God bless this country, we need it. Nevada is on a fast track to unmitigated debauchery if this woman is appointed.
That seems like a very easy question to respond "no" to. I wonder what her concern was
Traum has to be better than Judge Jennifer Dorsey. Another UNLV professor.
I have to disagree, I like Dorsey a lot because you know what you are going to get with her. Certainty from judges in criminal law is huge. Its the wild cards we could do without. As to Traum, my only experience with her is running the criminal justice clinic or whatever it is she does. Every time I have seen her she has unrealistic expectations for how criminal law seems to work and I worry that she will hold practitioners on both sides of the aisle to a higher standard than is realistic. I
I agree on Dorsey, but not to the positive, you do know what you are going to get with her. Traum, I have never heard of her. Think that might be a good thing.
That video is entertaining. Yeah, without significant real-world practice experience there is no way she should be confirmed.
Dorsey was a real lawyer. And she was pretty good.
Ben has nailed exactly what was the problem with Judge Markell which is that he had no concept of how bankruptcy practice actually works outside of the idealism of academia. I fear similar results.
Judge Markell wrote a sanctions order against an associate attorney about a decade ago that was so incendiary that he had to have known it would go viral (it did). The attorney's conduct and lack of diligence was not excusable, but the way Markell made such a public spectacle of punching down was just pathetic. I don't remember the name of that attorney, but I will always remember what a jerk Bruce Markell was in that order. I understand he's returned to academia. I hope he stays there forever. If you want to know the true character of a powerful person, watch how they treat others with substantially less power. I love hearing about local celebrities like Andre Agassi who treat people right. Too bad AA can't be on the bench.
Recently looked at a ninth circuit court opinion that went after an attorney for nothing, and it looks badly on the judges not the attorney. These judges' power trips are a joke.
Ninth Circuit is a circus. Their recent rulings ate very Trump like . Ripe forxapprals. Many opinions read for not even identify the issues. Looking at one here from Judge Andrew Hurwitz. Wow, just wow.
Excuse typos.
Judge Markell was one of the finest judges ever. I instantly discount my opinion of anyone who claims otherwise. Ditto Judge Bell.
I don't love Traum's appointment. That said, what a stupid question. "Should" certain crimes be "forgiven in the name of social justice"? She was right that if you're asking "should" questions then you're asking policy questions that are set at the legislature. Problem is she didn't do a great job of explaining why that's a stupid question to ask of a judicial candidate. The law establishes when certain crimes are excused or as he put it "forgiven" like self-defense or necessity. Judges then are supposed to apply those "shoulds" that are established by the legislature to determine when otherwise criminal conduct doesn't warrant a conviction. Whether a judge thinks crimes "should" be forgive in a situation doesn't matter. It's just a dumb question. But again, she didn't do a great job of explaining that she's not up for a legislative position and therefore her belief of whether crimes should be forgiven is 100% irrelevant and that she wouldn't apply her own political beliefs that are not within established law.
Also, what does he mean when he says "in the name of social justice?" I love that he says it's a simple question. What does that even mean? Gay people get to discriminate in the workplace? Black people get to steal? Native Americans get to traffic drugs? Sure makes for a great soundbite though. And it worked. People are bashing her for not answering a vague and unanswerable question.
@937
Amen! I actually loved Judge Markell, perhaps because I was never unprepared for his court. And when he asked one of his bullshit academia questions (almost always), I whipped out my ever-present Code Book, looked up whatever TF he was talking about and responded with my opinion of applicability as it related to my argument, rather than try to BS my way out of it.
It seemed to placate him and never failed me.
I saw the opposite approach dozens and dozens of times with other lawyers and they lost every time.
Excellent analysis 10:15 AM. It's too bad you didn't coach her because your answer (substantively) is a pretty great answer and one that should actually satiate true conservatives. "As a judge, I would not have the authority to decide which offenses are forgiven and which are not. That is the duty of the legislature. If I were confirmed, my job as a judge would be to apply the law objectively independent of my person views." Perfect. She over thought it and was very poorly coached.
How are your bonuses determined? my firm does and some previous firms have done a certain dollar amount per # of hours over the requirement. Unfortunately, the math doesn't add up in a way that makes sense for me to put in those extra hours. Basically, it's like $25/hr for the first hundred hours and then bumps up a little. Does anyone else not find this incentivizing?
2 -CI- 165k – no bonus
You can thank Harry Reid Internal Airport for Steve Disolak's bullshit appointments.
20-CR/G-176,000 +no bonus, but kick-ass PERS benefits.
23-cl 150k 475k bonus
22 – Family – solo 240K – no bonus (but I do get the pleasure of seeing the most unqualified humans to ever have walked the earth make the craziest decisions possible in the most demeaning manner)
Are you talking about the litigants or the jurists because I can see your point either way?
10th year attorney without any kind of even mildly impressive academic credentials. This is the first year I've broken $200k. Base is $115k. It feels surreal. It's not Adam Laxalt money, but it's more than I thought I would ever make.
13-F/P-$210,000+ no bonus.
How do I handle a justice court traffic ticket for my son? Used to be easy when I got my last ticket a few years ago, but they dont do that anymore, apparently.
Send him thoughts & prayers.
If its las vegas justice court, its all web based. You put in the case number and it spits you out your options.
If 10 over posted, pay the fine and it should be reduced to a parking ticket and no points. If we was drag racing while drunk, hire a lawyer.
I thought they weren't having traffic court until next year sometime? Everything's in limbo right now with regard to LVJC's traffic court.
4 -cl- 165k base + 30k bonus
Which big law firm in Nevada is handing out the biggest bonuses this year? Name names.
