Aloha Summer Vacation!

  • Law

It’s that time of year again where the bar congregates in some far off location for the Annual Vacation Meeting. This year, the far off location is the beautiful Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island in Hawaii. You can view a copy of the program here. We expect that some of you wonderful readers will be in attendance and share the gossip from the meeting with the rest of us. Will Justice Douglas be rocking his vacation wear again? Will the retiring Justice Saitta be there? What other judges are there? Any crazy stories? Will the animal law section protest the captive dolphins at the Hilton?

For the rest of us who won’t be making the trip to Hawaii, what kind of summer vacations do you have planned? Road trips? Camping? Europe? The Olympics? What ever it is, we hope you’re making some plans to have some time away from work and the law this summer. As for us, we’re heading out early today to beat the traffic. We’ll be back next week. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Is there any transparency about how much money is spent on the convention and what percentage comes from bar dues?

I'm sure there is, however, let me take a quote from former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, "WHAT DOES IT MATTER!!!"

It matters because we have some of the highest bar dues in the country and it would be nice to know if we are financing fancy boondoggles for judges, bar staff, and the board of governors with those dues.

I rarely go on vacation. I figure that my money is better used elsewhere given how young I am. Plus, there is plenty to do here.

Waste of my dues money watching a bunch of stuffed shirts and social climbers give each other plaques and jerk each other off about how important they are. Yes, just the way I would choose to spend my limited vacation time.

Because the non-lawyers who work at the state bar probably decided they wanted to see Austin on an all expenses paid vacation.

Agree with 9:40. I've never attended a State Bar meeting, my rationale being that if I'm going to spend money I don't have on an exotic vacation and burn precious vacation time, I'm doing something relaxing with my family as opposed to just working albeit in a pretty location.

Bank of Nevada – which embarrasses me because they are a sponsor of the state bar meeting. But their people are great. Couple it with law pay to make sure you don't let credit card fees eat into IOLTA deposits.

Citibank. It has free checking for attorneys and doesn't charge you by transaction. BofA is the worst. It will charge you for debit card transactions, deposits, checks, etc.

I'm a member of Boyd '13, so I know a good deal when I see it. In my solo practice I've been using Dr. Purva Pius, an honest GOD fearing man, to hold my IOLTA accounts. Dr. Pius was even generous enough to kindly loan me $250,000.00 as an incentive to set up my IOLTA account with him. When that $250k hits my account, it's gonna be great!

I also use Citibank. Everything is free and the customer service is usually pretty good. I use Citibank for personal, business, and IOLTA. I hate BofA and Wells sucks for plethora of other reasons.

Hey your money, not mine, but why doesn't anyone suggest Walt Disney World? Or at least Disney's new Hawaiian hotel? Otherwise you might just as well go to the Mandalay. You'll save the airfare and have more pocket change for power chugging Mai-Tais. Just sayin…

… as for Texas???? What the hell, man???? You know you people vote for these Governors, so suck it up. If you don't support candidates for the state bar board who will work for change, quit grumbling.

Read about you in Politico and your intent to support Trump at the Republican National Convention.

Something wasn't made clear in the article. Are you going to vote to nominate Trump at the Convention because of your allegiance to Nevada Republican Caucus participants?

Because you personally believe Trump is the best candidate for the Republican Party to put forward for the office of POTUS?

Both reasons?

Neither reason?

We had the same problem in my neighborhood adjacent to Summerlin (just east of Summerlin South). The bad guys know the police are stretched thin and not proactive. They are not keeping the heat on the bad guys (gang bangers, punks, criminals). Most important thing to know your neighbors-network with them. Get security doors (front and rear). Secure your windows. Get an alarm. Get a large dog that barks (a watch dog). Keep an eye out for people who don't belong in your neighborhood casing your neighborhood. Capture license plates with make and model of your vehicle. For self defense get a small baseball bat. Also important to have a gun handy. These gang bangers will beat up, rape, and murder you and your family. Cameras are also a good idea. Most likely the bad guys are not far from your neighborhood.

I live in that area too. This has happened two or three times in the last couple of months, plus the garden-variety burglaries are out of control. This little punk this morning took a bullet. Unfortunately he survived, so now we have to waste taxpayer's money on him, as well as food and water.

The simple truth is that Metro is a really shitty police department. There are good, well-meaning cops within its ranks, for sure. But I don't ever want to have to trust them to vindicate my rights or protect me because I don't believe they can or will.
