Anyone know the Judge in the LVMPD case? That will go very far in determining the success. My own internal question is whether this is the sort of case a jury is going to be sympathetic to, or will they just think anyone going out to the situation gets what’s coming. I mean i guess the jury can really go either way, will be a major wild card.

I am still trying to digest the fact that a more or less 60 year old man is dating an early 30’s associate at the same firm. . . . .after previously and casually banging a Judge his own age.

I mean other than the serious upgrade. . . . .

I’m an active member of the LDS Church. To the extent the Church failed to report known abuse, and/or leaders perpetrated abuse, victims deserve full vindication in the courts.

This article is curious, because it identifies the Defendant as a “high priest,” which, to outsiders sounds like a position of responsibility and authority. But a “high priest” is just a level of priesthood that every Mormon male eventually ascends to regardless of whether they are an actual leader (this automatic promotion was true in the 90’s, and is not necessarily the case anymore, but I don’t want to drift into a technical discussion). Suffice it to say, being a “high priest” by itself, does not constitute leadership or agency acting on behalf of the Church. In a local congregation, the local male leaders are the Bishop, his counselors (who must be high priests, perhaps this is where the confusion comes from), the Elders Quorum President and his counselors (who ARE NOT high priests).

This could just be a Complaint drafted by someone who imprecisely described status and leadership. It could also be a reporter who is unfamiliar with Mormonism. But it could also be a Plaintiff with a tenuous theory as to the institutional Church itself. Hard to tell. Whatever the case, I hope that at the end of the process, the victim feels heard and vindicated.

That’s a gross misrepresentation of what High Priest is. Most men only attain the level of High Priest when they are called as a bishopric or high council member which means this person held critical leadership roles in the local church at some time in their life.

12:45 PM here. That’s true now, but it wasn’t in the 90’s. In the 90’s (and before about 2010), men who reached about 40 or 45 and who had not been ordained to a High Priest because they had been in a Bishopric, High Council or Stake Presidency were transferred to the High Priests to be with the older men. The younger male adults (under 40ish) were in the Elders Quorum and the High Priests were all the old codgers over 40. This distinction collapsed when high priest groups were abolished at the ward level and now there is only an Elders Quorum (which still has high priests in it). In the 90’s almost every male over the age of 40-45ish functionally became a high priest as a matter of course. That’s just a simple fact. There were no 55 or 50 year old men in EQ’s in the 90’s. It’s so weird to be indignant over this point.

Mormon here. Can confirm. I took this as a lawyer trying to firm up a claim against the church as an institution. “High Priest” sounds like a representative of the church like a Priest would be in a catholic church. “An old guy in the ward” would not lend much help in terms of getting the church on the hook.

12:45 PM here. There are any number of reasons why the strange designation of “high priest” was used. From a purely tactical standpoint, I think it probably hurts the case because you get into a muddled explanation of what priesthood offices and callings are and aren’t (and even the overlay of the 90’s versus today). Just look at the mess of this exchange. If the “high priest” was a Bishop or bishopric counselor, just say so in laymans terms. “The Defendant was one of three men who oversaw and lead the congregation.” or “The Defendant was the leader of the men’s group in the congregation” If he really was just an old codger who had no leadership responsibilities, then you’ve got to come up with some other theory for vicarious liability, but just explain it clearly. The article does nothing to really tell us what the Defendant’s role and responsibilities, if any, were. Ultimately, though, what really matters is that there is a person out there who was profoundly harmed. I really do hope this process helps them. What a horrible thing to carry for decades, to say nothing of the experiences themselves.

It’s interesting that they chose counsel from Northern California. Seems like that is an unnecessary headwind. Hopefully she knows how to correctly pronounce Nevada.

The case is 2:26-cv-00123-JAD-BNW. The alleged abuser is her father. That nugget of information seems to have a somewhat important bearing on the liability of the church on abuse that occurred for 4 years before she disclosed it. There’s probably a viable claim on the failure to report. I think she’d have a stronger case if she alleged failure to supervise by the church for the failure to disclose by the bishop, but that’s just me. My heart goes out to her.

I LURVE the redactions in the Picon Press posting of Kelci Binau’s kamikaze mission against Bridget Robb because they are so inconsistent.
– Pilates Studio is redacted in one place but identified as Loops Pilates elsewhere
– Boyfriend’s name is redacted in one location but the TPO asks Robb to stay away from “Matthew Addison’s house.” You mean this Matthew Addison? https://www.mcdonaldcarano.com/people/matt-addison/
– Law firm is redacted in her statement but McDonald Carano is identified at least 5 other places through the Application

Also who was Bridget Robb’s biggest campaign donor in 2020? Matthew Addison according to the RGJ. https://www.rgj.com/story/news/politics/2020/10/12/2020-election-bushur-faces-robb-washoe-district-court-dept-13/5897735002/

No one ridiculed her safety concerns (although some above have questioned if perhaps she was hyperbolic in her written Application qualifying pursuant to the statute(s)). Quite a few people have rightfully questioned the decision to pursue this path in light of the collateral damage that it was caused and will cause to other people. Bridget Robb has to live with her choices and actions; however so do Matthew Addison and Kelci Binau.

I think you just made @4:20’s point. What, exactly, was Binau supposed to do? Robb had stalked her hundreds of times and had been repeatedly told to stop. At what point should one reasonably expect such behavior to escalate into physical violence or property damage? The concern is plainly reasonable, regardless of whether the conduct meets the legal definition of stalking. That point is not actually in dispute, is it?

I don’t pratice much in Reno, and I am completely unfamiliar with the people involved in this story. But I will add that from a distance, I am very sympathetic to Robb—I am closer to her in age and (probably) intelligence than I am to Binau. But I still believe that Binau had no viable options for stopping or de-escalating the behavior, and that she made the right decision.

I have no doubt that Binau has an ego (most lawyers do), and her writing is poor (to say the least). But even lawyers with egos who are bad writers should be able to seek protection without ridicule or admonishment.

What really stands out is the comment about “the collateral damage that it has caused and will cause to other people.” That framing is notably self-centered in a situation involving several serious issues. There is no need to pile on or blame the victim. If the supposed “collateral damage” refers to the attorneys around “Baddison,” then this should be treated as a teachable moment about internal policies and firm culture, not as a critique of the person seeking protection.

“What, exactly, was Binau supposed to do?”
-Maybe (if the statements were made to RPD as Binau claims but for which we have no corroboration) have RPD effectuate a citation rather than file the Application in this form.
-Maybe have Addison be the applicant and Binau be the benefited party if you want to pursue a TPO so it is not framed as Jessica Rabbit vs. Jessica Tandy. We rely on Addison sending what turns out to be a couple of texts asking Robb to stop and then filing a very noteworthy Application for TPO. Could have gone to her chambers. Could have sought intervention of Egan Walker rather than him getting blindsided by an Order that he now has to respond to the RGJ about. Any of these options would have been much less salacious and probably not on Inside Edition.
-Maybe have the very firm who she has decided to drag through the mud intervene on her behalf (although that would have involved having to perhaps come clean to the management committee and partners that there had been/is relationships which put the firm is a bad light and potential jeopardy with facts that now are inescapably public and going to continue to be hashed out)

There is nothing self-centered about thinking like a lawyer when you are a lawyer. TPO was not her only option. TPO was certainly not her best option. Anyone who practices in these areas would and should have weighed the costs versus the benefits. That is not victim blaming; that is lawyering. Cool that she no longer has Judge Robb driving by her house and now will have People Magazine outside of her house.

How do you know that the management committee was unaware of the relationship? Additionally, switching the applicant and the benefited party is a distinction without a difference in this instance. Does Egan Walker have magical powers? Since when do the police do anything without a TPO? Are things upside down in Reno?

Good question about the management committee because I suspect they knew of the relationship. Text messages between Addison and Robb attached to TPO application acknowledge he lost an election in December, presumably to remain managing partner, as verified by his firm profile stating he was MP from 2018 to December 2025. Word on the street is all the partners knew and many weren’t happy but the firm allowed the relationship to continue.

ICE just killed another protestor in Minnesota—land of hotpot and the nicest people you’ll ever meet. There were several ICE goons tackling one man, and then one of the goons thought it would be a good idea to murder the protestor. Yet Minnesotans continue to protest Amazing.

What do we do if these goons come here? We need a plan.

In addition to murders, an ICE agent has pleaded guilty to raping women in detention. I’m sure he’s the top of the iceberg. That’s because ICE agents are not the best of the best—they seem to be largely unsuccessful men desperate for a job and status. This is dangerous for all of us and our children, not only immigrants (who also don’t deserve brutality for simply being in the United States). ICE is routinely overstepping its mandate and is now a police force used against anyone who vocally opposes authoritarianism.

You realize that there is video from every angle showing that the man was being tackled by several armed men. ICE is now saying that the murdered man was “armed,” but we can all see from the multiple videos that the murdered man did not have a gun in his hands. At most, he likely had a hulstered gun which is legal for American citizens.

ICE is out of control:

Having watched sev angles it seems he was filming and doing some traffic direction, ICE grabbed a female nearby, he went to help her, everyone was pepper sprayed, she moved away after other ice came to assist the first ice, victim pushed to ground, was pistol whipped, did not seem remotely possible to be aggression given that he was on ground and hands on ground, and then shot numerous times

Nicest people in Minnesota? The Governor, Mayor and authorities almost let Minneapolis burn to the ground worse than the Rodney King riots. They just need to put a stop to this rebellion and anarchy. Assist the federal authorities and be done with it. The deaths are unfortunate and would have been avoided with local law enforcement support. We have not had immigration enforcement for decades. There used to be immigration sweeps and crackdowns years ago in the garment industry. Dragnets. Immigration and local police. It has been forgotten because there has been no enforcement till now.

Come on. I am a Republican and former cop. I am all for law enforcement against violent criminals. But this is inexcusable. We are not murdering MS-13 gangs; we have a masked junta whose members are cold blooded murdering housewives and nurses. Law enforcement support would have meant law enforcement being allowed there. State and local law enforcement were excluded from the scene. The murder weapon was secreted away without the “local law enforcement support” you describe being allowed to participate.

Remember when we on the right were the party of lawful carry and curbing government waste and abuse? We have masked federal agents pulling over U.S. citizens because of the color of their skin and murdering citizens near their homes. If we are fan of “local law enforcement”, then we would let local law enforcement support get in there and investigate.

Look, I understand the sentiment. I do. You want to say that ICE doesn’t have general policing powers over your typical citizen. But when you say that is is not law enforcement, you’re ignoring the C – Customs. Maybe that’s fair, because I honestly think that these says, ICE is all about the I and is ignoring the C too. But Customs enforcement regularly deals with US citizens smuggling, and they absolutely have jurisdiction over them.

That said, fuck ICE now and forever. They need to be abolished.

Sometimes there are people on your side you wish were on the other. Read the room, my dude. The national conversation isn’t about customs enforcement investigating and detaining Americans who smuggle. No one wants to abolish that. The national conversation is about masked men, some of whom are confirmed white suprematists, most of whom are unqualified, going into American cities, detaining people without accountability or due process, and killing people. Americans are extremely grateful for law enforcement who are honest people. What we reject is a militarized force that appears loyal to Donald Trump personally rather than to the U.S. Constitution.
